I love my X5 - don't use wireless so wouldn't upgrade to X50 which without the dual card capacity of my X5 would be a step backward. I like the feel of the X5, too, and think the other would feel too slim!
I agree, I was about 2 clicks away from buying the x30i when it cam e out, then I did the same thing and took a step back to think about what my X5 currently does, in relation to what the other models do.
I say stick with the X5 until it craps out on you.

I also have had my Axim X5 400MHZ for over 2 years now. Good handheld for gaming back then, but its showing its age. Its speed is so slow compared to the X30, and the Dpad digitally sticks when too many buttons are pressed at the same time.
Its certainly been my favorite PPC ever, but I think it may be time to upgrade soon. I want wireless and a faster machine to play emulations on. Also want something smaller too. X30 may be the ticket.
As an X30 owner, I can tell you that you won't go wrong with it as your choice for replacement. I'd strongly urge you to go HIGH though, as the speed difference between the mid and high models is noticable. It also has several features which software developers haven't taken full advantage of, most notably landscape mode. While it doesn't have the VGA capability I haven't found any reason to miss that, and definitely feel the difference in price between the X50 and X30 makes the X30 the better choice for people who have to keep cost in mind.

I want to upgrade to an X50v but cant really validate the need.
I want the X50v for the
Integrated wifi that doesnt have a stupid bubble or card sticking out the top
CF/SD interface like my X5
Games! Read soo much about the great gaming...
Speed...
and
Memory, well I would have prefered a LOT more ram but meh...
So im sticking with my X5 adv. Have a second small battery for it, WiFi, nice RhinoSkin Al, and it still works great... %&*^&*^ audio problems tho but still, cant justify getting rid of it.
I don't really love my X5, but it does anything that I need.
Books, movies, music, simple arcade games...
Yes, it's huge, but in my opinion it's the only minus.
Well, now I have my X50v as well as my Axim X5. There are pros and cons to both I believe. The X5 is much larger, but to me this wasn't a big minus since I have large hands. The biggest changes I enjoy are the X50v is the video which rocks. Not just for games, but the fonts are much clearer to me reading ebooks now. Everything looks much more crisp than the X5. However, I do miss the side scroll switch the X5 has for reading ebooks. The X50v has the record and WiFi button in that place now. So now I have to use the D-button or the touch pen to flip pages. I'm not really sure if the X50v is really anymore than I orignally paid since it now includes WiFi which would cost extra on the X5. I don't like the new cradle compared to the old one though. The X50v cradle is a simple black plastic with Dell in white letters with an LED for the spare battery that fits in the back of it. The older X5 has that cool smoked chrome look, and I still think it's great in looks when it lights up. The X5 is slower, and it's noticable when open apps and games. So if your X5 does everything you need it to do, and your not a geeky hobbiest like me, stick with the X5! :)

I love my X5 too... I'm thinking in an upgrade too like a X50v with his tons of pixels.. jeje... 640x480 but I can see in aximsite's review (http://www.aximsite.com/articles/link.php?id=200) his poor battery life... you got 2.4 hours in normal use... yes... you can surf in internet in landscape with his high resolution and I would like to play snes emulation in high speed... but, any way... I have no time to play with my X5... jeje... so... I think we need to consider an upgrade only when Microsoft releases a new version of windows mobile whith more useful features... :)

Axim X5 400Mhz
Kingston 512mb (with bad sectors >:( )
Symbol Wifi CF Card
And a lot of useful software

Also went from a x5 to a x50v. I liked my x5 for most thing but found the screen very limiting for using spreadsheets reading email. Ect. If my sis inlaw wasn't looking for a pda I would have kept it and not given it to her.
X5:
Pros
-battery just rocked. Could go days without charging.
-Size. Felt substaintal. Like better then the x50v
-Got it a lower initial price.
Cons
-Video: Very limiting on the quality you can get before bogging down. Talking about movies
-Never liked the d-pad
-Wi-fi don't have it and thought I didn't have use for it.
X50v
Pros
-Video- Incredible res. Able to play 700meg divx movies that I used on my pc and no boging.
Wi-fi/Bluetooth- Did not think I needed it but now cannot live without. Surf, send email, getting BT keyboard. Sit in bed and stream mp3 from pc. Watch movies streamed from my pc.
Power-There is not much the processer can't handle. When surfing with wi-fi load times almost pc like.
Video card-the 16mb video card really shows it's stuff when playing movies. Can compress to the max and still looks and runs great. Almost like a portable DVD player.
VGA- This is the reason I bought it. I could not use it for work like I wanted because by the time I got enough info on the screen in a doc, web page, spreadsheet, database I could not read it on my x5. Without using the vga tweak these are so much crisper you can read it. With the Vga tweak you can see alot. I even run remote sessions and take over my pc from the x50v and have not problem navigating or using access for example.
Controls- the d pad is very good much better then the mushy one on x5. Would like a scroll function but I quess you can only put so many buttons one.
Cons:
Size- I think it is bit puny. If it was larger maybe a better battery could have been used. And included scrool buttons.
Battery life- It is not good. But keep in mind you don't expect a Ferarii to have the same mpg as a civic and this is the same. The processor, Screen, wi-fi,memory,bluetooth, video card are all cutting edge and drain the battery fast. I have the larger battery and that last me throught the work day fine. At home I have to charge more frequently because I use it so much. Don't mind the bulk of the battery but when showing people the unit they are more impressed with the video ect. with the small/slim one in.
I have 2 Axim X5 Performance models, the first one I got in April 2003 and the second a few months later. I have lots of software for them, cool leather cases (Piel Frama), GPS receiver, keyboard, etc. So spent quite a bit on it, and there is NO WAY I am going to upgrade until both have died completely. I LIKE the chunky feel to the X5 and, having dropped and bounced the poor things several times on the floor (albeit carpeted) off of desks and chairs, and even a couple of times on tarmac! The dear things continue to work just fine. Okay they have their odd moments when I need to do a soft reset, but generally they are very reliable. They are used daily, and for various tasks. I admit I don't use them for the internet, have no real need for WIFI or bluetooth, and never watch videos on them. But they are used for practically everything else! Upgrade to the latest model ... nah not me! Hopefully by the time these two die there will be several newer models available, and maybe one that has a battery life approaching the X5's ... after all it is a pocket portable device and battery life for me far outweighs fancy graphics. :)
I live in my Axim X5 cheapo unit. The way I look at it, I made the choice to buy the X5 based on my needs. It fit all of my needs, it still does. New bells and whistles would be nice, but is it worth the price to upgrade equipment that is only 2-3 years old? To me it is not.
I only recently got rid of my old Casio E-11. I had that for about 6 years and it served me well. Just like the X5 it was bulky but sturdy. Up until I bought the X5, it was fitting all of my needs.
I'll give up my X5 when they pry it from my cold dead fingers!
X5 is a great device. Keep it if it serves all your needs. When X50v came out, it was overwhelmingly clear to me that it was time to move on. When your time comes, you would know :D. Until then, save your cash.
For those who decide to upgrade, just know that you might also need to update your software as well. $9.99 here, $14.99 there, it adds up.
For me, I couldn't be happier with X50v  . I still have my X5. Couldn't part with it.
I bought an X50V from the 'refurb' pile that Dell had; it was listed at $349.00.
Looks, feels, operates so smoothly that I think I'll give it a boquet of flowers!!! I've d/l the SE_VGA, GSPlayer, and just ordered the VGA adapter cable from PC-Mobile.com.
Man, I'm hooked by the face with this beauty. At first I had difficulties figuring out the comm ports & setting up WiFi. Now all is so slick. My next venture is to decide whether to buy a microdrive or CF card to fill the CF slot.
Oh, lastly, I'll piece-part sold my X5 for more than I bought it for.... spare battery, BT cards, cradle, Wifi, 56k, adapters & cables, etc.
Well, its been a long time since I've posted here (as you can see this is only my 2nd post, although I have been a member since the x5 came out in 2003. I view the site weekly, but dont find much to post about), but I have to say that my x5 is still going strong. I have never even considered upgrading (err, updating) my x5. I have everything set just how I want it, I dont need any new excessories, its perfect. Why try to "fix" something that doesnt need fixing. The only problem I have is that my backup battery just doesnt last as long as it used to, but they are so cheap, I have a stockpile of about 10 on reserve, so its no problem. Until it just flat-out dies on me, I'll keep using it for tunes, movies, and GPS...
