X5 For Life
Hi,
I've had my X5 for a couple of years. I've got all sorts of attachments and gadgets to make it work for me. I check the posts daily and I was almost tempted to buy an X50V, but stepped back and took a deep breath; decision was "not yet ready."
What is the fascination with the X50V? Is it the feeling of having the latest/newest model? Am I alone in thinking that the X5 serves all of the same purposes, although I have to extract BT card and insert the WiFi card? Is the convenience worth the additional $250 (sell the X5 in exchange)?
How do you other X5 users think on this? Money isn't the issue; I'm wondering about the value added.
Does anyone else out there feel me on this? Holla back if you feel like it; it's all about fun.

I still have my X5 as well. I started with the 32 mb version when it was released in 2002 and then upgraded last year to an Ipaq 5550 because of the memory and built in BT/wifi. I returned it because I did not like the battery performance, and bought the X5 64 mb version.
I am also tempted to buy the X50v as it looks to be a great machine. Price is one thing holding me back only because I cannot justify a new PPC while my current one is still working for me. I think that if you get a good deal on an X50 model it really is not bad price because by the time you add the costs together of the BT/Wifi cards on a nonwireless model, it could be close if not the same.
I have no use for the wireless features (yet anyway) but it would be nice to already have them incorporated should you come across a hotspot, etc.
Here are my general reasons why I am not upgrading yet....
1) Wife
2) see # 1
3) X5 accessories that I have pimped it up with (tomtom car kit, extended batteries, cases, etc)
4) I am waiting for the next version of Windows mobile to come out to see features
5) I know the X5 is chunky compared to new models, but I really like the look and feel of it
Just my two cents....thanks

I still have my X5 and got al sort of attachments and use it every day. I also have thoughts to upgrade to v50i but stepped back and said to my self what can't the X5 do? I have yet to answer that so I will continue to be an X5 owner!

I also have had my X5 for about 2 years now. I 've upgrade to the latest Windows and Firmware. I've added a Linksys CF card and a 1 Gig M SD card. I use to add and play with frivoulous shareware software all the time, but now concentrate on work and purchased software.
It still does everything I need, at the speeds I need and at the cost I need.

I have had an X5 for over 2 years myself. I wanted to upgrade becuase I was tired of having to remove my CF card to get WiFi. When I Finally got my hands on the X50v I was floored. The X5 now looks HUGE and Heavy. The Screen is Small and Yellow and very dissapointing (next to the X50v) I will say that I am SOOOOOO Happy I upgraded to the X50v it is an amazing looking, feeling, working piece of electronic Heaven. In my opinion it is well worth the money.

Yeah, what he said! Way better for movie watching and game play. Also, mine is no where near as boggy. Well worth the upgrade. I bought my X50v early when they first came out. That helped me to sell my X5 while it still had value. My out of pocket cost was not that bad.
The other thing is a lot of people use their pda for more than just an assistant. I view mine as more of a hobby. I justify it by not drinking, smoking, or squandering money. I save for the newest model. I am already saving for the next upgrade. :approve:

Hello,
This may very well be my second or third post. I purchased the X5 off ebay a week ago, and i think it is wonderful. I got it for a little over a $100, and it was kept it great condition (i even noticed an extended warranty from dell until 2006). I use it on a daily basis. So far it is doing everything i need it to do, so it would not make sense to upgrade right now. I went from a casio pv, to the casio be-300, and now the X5. I too looked at the x50, and agree it's sweet! When the prices start to drop, i may be tempted...the way /KLappDOgg/ describes it, i may very well take another look at it tonight.

The X5 is the only Pocket PC on the market for which an extremely high capacity battery is available. I'm referring to the 3800 mAh Mugen extended battery. I think the battery life of the X5 with this battery could get in the Guinness book of records: about 9 hours of continuous use with the backlight on. I often use my Axim as a GPS and I can hike with it all day, not having to worry about the battery. With any other Pocket PC, this application would be impossible.

I've had my X5 for over a few years now myself, and just paid it off. Originally, I bought mine to mostly read books with MS Reader. I was looking into buying the GemStar Ebook reader, that is now out of business. But found the Dell a much more affordable and useful tool.
Like yourself, I too was thinking of getting a 50V, mostly due to the VGA 640x480 screen, and the speed upgrade. However, seems many programs still are not written for VGA, so there really isn't a big improvement in the video for programs for viewing. An few hundred megahertz upgrade would be nice though, and helpful. As I use my X5 daily for work and home, it is starting to fill up. I think my biggest hold back is money vs need to upgrade. I do still keep that coupon that Dell mailed me with my bill for a $100 off though. It may not be expired now though, not sure.
I would still like WiFi CF card for mine, and have purchased tons of software since I bought it.

I have never had an X5 but I did buy a IPAQ 3115 back in November and used it until February. After seeing a clients X50v with the VGA screen and seeing how thin and light it was i ordered a X50v that same day and sold my IPAQ. I have had no regrets.

Oh great, now you guys are making me think about upgrading to a 50v again! So is the screen a lot bigger on the 50V compared to the X5? Like yourself, this is kind of my hobby as well as my tool. The bogging down is starting to become an issue with mine as well. My Flex Wallet now takes awhile to open since I have so many cards saved.

I also have had my Axim X5 400MHZ for over 2 years now. Good handheld for gaming back then, but its showing its age. Its speed is so slow compared to the X30, and the Dpad digitally sticks when too many buttons are pressed at the same time.
Its certainly been my favorite PPC ever, but I think it may be time to upgrade soon. I want wireless and a faster machine to play emulations on. Also want something smaller too. X30 may be the ticket.

i am an X5 user for the pass two years, and it has not given me any problem, and believe me I use my X5 extensively, both for business and pleasure. Last Christmas my wife bought me an X50v (after all the wait for it), since I said the VGA screen would be a dream. Well I had the X50v for 8 days, before I sold it to a co-worker for at my cost. The reason. The VGA screen. It was a dream, using it to browse the web, which was my main use for the VGA screen (Using SE VGA). I also use it to to view other programs in VGA mode, but I just could not see the small fonts.
After 15 minutes my eyes were watering, and my vision got blurry. Admitted I have old eyes, but since the VGA screen was not working for me, and my X5 covered all of my business and pleasure needs, there was really no incentive for me to keep it. Until the VGA screen capabilities are better enhanced in the operating system, and if possible a 5" inch VGA screen is made (I am dreaming now), I will stick with my X5, and I am seriously considering buying another as a backup. If I had held onto my X50v for awile longer, maybe I would have found a program or two which would have made good use of the VGA screen, but I wanted it's use for all my functions, which wasn't to be.

Well, I just ordered my X50v last weekend, but it's on backorder, so I won't see it for another week. I plan on selling my old X5, along with the extra 3200batter, iHolster, and 2003 upgrade CD, charger and 128 SD card. I was thinking of $225 for it. Let me known of if your interested. I hope I don't have the same issues with small fonts. And maybe most my porgrams that can be adjusted, but I'm not sure.
