Just got the Axim. I'd like to play with it now. The book says to install both batteries and charge for 4 hours before using. Couldn't I just install the little back-up battery and then use wall power to power the Axim? I could then charge the main battery tonight while I sleep.

By now you should know that the little backup battery will not power the Axim. You should let the battery charge until the green light comes on. Most of us had it charged in much less than the 4 hours Dell cited.

Hey, if it turns on and you don't smell smoke ... have a nice day!

No really, that would fall under unsupported operations. You could burn out the voltage regulator or something.

What if the battery is in the Axim, and the Axim is in the cradle? Can it be turned on and used while it is sitting in the cradle (albeit a bit uncomfortably)???

Once the battery is charged, sure!
Take this from someone who has learned to follow instructions the hard way ... you can't always know why they say to do things in a certain order. The charger needs some voltage from the battery to buck it's potential, and using the device before it's charged is ... heck if I know.

Why take a chance of messing it up, Grasshopper?
