Need input I'm having screen problems should I replace my X5
Hey everybody a while back I started to experience problems with my screen. I would turn it on and it would be unresponsive to the stylus. I tried doing all the normal things like a hard reset, align the screen, and it would still not work. My screen is not cracked and has no visible damage. I opened up the x5 and saw that there was a little burn mark in oe of the cables connecting to the screen so I put some electricle tape around it and sure enough it worked better and the screen would freeze up less frequently. However the screen is acting up again. Can you guys give me some input? I would like to know if it is still a good idea to invest in a new screen for my X5 or should call it a loss and get the new x50. Ive had my X5 pretty much since it was released by Dell and it has already paid for itself. Please help me out guys.
How good are you at soldering? I have never cracked open an X5 but if you can get to those connections relatively easily I would suggest desoldering the old wire and soldering a new one. I don't know how technically inclined you are but that might be an option for you. It does not sound like your problem is that serious but definitely needs to be repaired. What kind of budget do you have? If you are considering purchasing a new X50, you might want to just do that.
Thanks for your response. I'm not very technically inclined so I don't thinik that I could solder. I've actually been thinking of getting an X50 but the funds are not there and I really only need my X5 to keep track of case notes and sync it to outlook. What I really want to do is get the most out of my money. If replacing the screen is a good long term investment than I will go ahead and do it. What I want to avoid is spending 150 now and then another 400 i a couple of months to replace my X5.
Well it does not sound like the screen is bad, just the wiring (referring to what you said in your original post) so getting that replaced seems like it would be your best viable option right now considering your current financial situation.
Thats a real common problem with the X :approve: 5. You might just open it back up and try to see if the tape has moved or become crushed against the screw again. Might work for you again. I had the same problem myself only I fixed it the first time (so far).

Unless the wires in the connection themselves are broken off in a very clean manner - I doubt that soldering would do the trick. I agree with x5x5x5 that the screen itself sounds okay. I bet the connector has some intermittant or unstable connections. At worse - you have two or more shorting together. I would first try to get the screen working with the connector exposed and stablize it while it works. I would expect this to have a less than 50% chance of working, so watch for what wires look bad or cause a failure when gently moved. When you isolate the problem, look for a way to stabilze (or insulate if shorted) just that wire.
You might also read through another current thread about a worse but similar problem. This thread mentions some cheap sources of new parts you may ultimately need to check into.
Hey guys thanks for the feedback. I think that I will open my ax again to see if I can take a more detailed look at the wires that are probably at fault for my screen malfunction. I've also noticed that applying pressure to the sides of the X5 sometimes helps. Thanks everyone.
Simply open your X5 again and place a small strip of card board or double side tape on both sides of the area between the screen and the front of your axim, re assemble then your'e good as new.
This fix MAY or MAY NOT be good for you. It happens to people that actually use the buttons on the bottom of the PPC. I tend not to. Nearly everything except power on is a screen tap.
If you need to have it replaced, it can be done, but is around $100 for parts, labor, and shipping. You need to ask if it's worth it to keep the device running, or sell it on Ebay with the caveat of the situation, and then taking that $100 plus what you'd get for your X5 and put it into the price of a new device.

Thats the frame exerting pressure on screen problem. unloosen your screws to the frame and find a good position by moving the frame around and retighten screws but dont overdue it just get them snug and see if it responds better
Just place a pice of cardboard between the frame and the screem ,you don't have to open the device. It will solve the sctreen tap problem
By the way looking at the line up of axims that the CHIOR GUY POSTED the x5 is till the cutest.
