Greetings! I am a new Axim X5 owner and I hope we are not a dying breed! About 3 months ago my iPAQ H3970 died an ignominous death and I have been going nuts without my PDA. I've long looked at the Axim and felt that the X50 series highly over priced...so here I am. I'm looking forward to a long a beneficial relationship. Any pitfalls I should be warned of would be greatly appreiciated!

TIA,

Had mine for almost three years, won't upgrade until some major advancements in processing power. I use my AXIM X5 for everything I could use the new ones for, With CF adapters

Just bought a Globalsat BC337 CF GPS card and Seidio 2500 powered mount for my X5. Plus they still seem to be selling in the UK:

I really liked and enjoyed my x5, I had cf lan card, cf bluetooth and cf wlan go with it, making it a very capable unit. But I hated to switch the cards when I went from bluetooth dialup to wireless lan or to wired lan.

I have had mine since about a month after they were released. It was a birthday present from my wife. She was just marvelling on Sunday that I still use it all the time. She had asked if I wanted an upgraded one for Christmas. I said I had just gotten this one broken in the way I like it.Maybe once I run it into the ground, but for now, I love my X5.

I am glad to read so many users of the X5. Mine will be making its 3rd International trip.

Sure there are additions etc.. I would like to have, but I do not even use my X5 to its max, and I use it a lot!

I've had it since they were released (yes, it ran ppc 2002 back then, and used the pxa250 proc instead of the pxa255) and have finally upgraded to a wm5 pocketpc phone. (cingular 8125) However, while I am leaving my axim x5, i am giving it to my little sister who is ecstatic over receiving it. So in a sense, while one x5 user is leaving, another one is joining. (The balance is maintained :-P )

You know, except for a few snafus here and there, the x5 I purchased in 02' running PPC version A02, is still going strong. I have all the functionality in it I need so I really don't need to purchase more programs for it. Internal wifi would be nice, but the CF card slot and my Linksys card works just fine.

I just replaced my X5, after two and a half years, with an x51v (loving it). I have now loaned my X5 to one of my daughters so that she can manage her calendar and take notes.

X5 is still going strong.

Kind of true Kind of not: Originally, I used a visor (palm knock off) that cost $175 in 1996. It fell and got a cracked screen in 2001. Over a yr ago I decided to try again this time by borrowing a friends ipaq 1910 with ppc 2002. It was pretty good but had many deficiencies: Battery drained fast, soft reset needed about every 5 to 9 days, exceptionally poor character recognition in all modes except keyboard. Mangle the formatting of ms word docs, etc.

Once I upgraded to x51v I didn't need to monitor uptime anymore, battery didn't need to be charged daily. I could actually write with transcriber, I could test wireless networks and get on the net ocassionally and so on. Like you I invested all kinds of time in various apps etc but threw most out when going to WM5.

Trust me: changing over will be painful for the frist 3 months. After that you'll never look back. I got my x51v for $350 OTD brand new on special. How can one go wrong? The longer you hang on the better things get so it's not bad to wait either.

CONS: it will take a year before software catchs up and bug patches for wm5. Right now I'm careful not to add anything that might cause problems.

I like my X5.
I use it all the time.
The only nice things would be if it had built in BT and WiFi, but I don't use those too much, so it is not a big deal to swap CF cards.

Bought my X5 shortly after they came out, and I still use it for:
  • ebooks
  • powerpoint presentations
  • word processing at meetings
  • transporting files
  • games
  • viewing photos
  • Avant Go
  • Expense tracking
  • and MORE!

I still get the "wow" factor when I pull it out at meetings, or come up with information that others think should be in my briefcase, or back on my computer at work, etc.
The only thing luring me towards an X51v is technolust, and the fact that I have so many things loaded on it that the memory gets a bit low at times.
