Just exchanged old axim for a new one. Behold my experience.
I finally decided the D-Pad was too squishy. I called Dell and they sent me a brand spankin new one. The first thing I did was check the D-Pad. I can actually move to the right now. I also checked out the Stats:
Old =
Processor: Intel PXA250
ROM: A00
New out of the box =
Processor: Intel PXA255
ROM: A02
Can anyone confirm what exactly this means? My hunch is I got all the latest chip/rom etc. along with a less faulty D-Pad and maybe even an IR port that works. I also recieved a new battery, power cable & new crappy case. Did anyone else go through this and just keep all the new stuff? They probably don't want my old partially used battery anyways. If I recall correctly the tech said I should only return the actual unit. Did anyone else go through this and just keep the second battery, cord & case? Did you get charged for keeping it?

I just did the same thing and got the setup you did. I did not however, get the return airfrieght bill. I have to call them back. I wish I knew. I plan on keping the manual they sent me since my first one did not come with one. Other than that, I would love to know also..

my situation is the same with you, but both my AX Dpad not working right. 1st ax dpad stuck sometimes. 2nd AX when i press the right button , it's either skip one or jump up and down before move to next cell ( i have test this in Excel). I am waiting for a third one now.
i don't know about keep the all stuff and return a base unit. Good luck.:D

Until today I thought that there was nothing wrong with my D-pad. I could move up and down, which is what I use it for mostly, although I could see using it to move side to side in a spreadsheet.
Well I tested it based on No12BeWithMe mentioning the Excel spreadsheet test (simply moving between cells) and I can move up, down, and to the left -- no skipping or jumping. Trying to move to the right causes the centre / Enter button to be pressed and I exit out of the spreadsheet.
I then fired up a Word document and could move to the right a bit but then it also decided I had hit Enter and quit the document. Tried the same test in Notes and got the same result as with Word.
In Media Player it seems to work okay, jumping to the next track. I do have the ROM upgrade installed.
I am hesitant to return the unit since everything else works well. However, I shelled out good money for this and should have a D-pad that works right.
You did shell out money for a unit that should work properly so I thinnk you are in the right to get it fixed or replaced.
I exchanged mine because my dpad wouldn't work correctly each time I press right or sometimes up on my PXA250 B2.
Now that I have the replacement, PXA255 A0, the Navigator Button works better but now I'm having issues with the battery because it seems to drain faster and the backlight is not as bright as my first one.
I'm still debating if I should get another replacement or not with Dell. At least the people I have in contact there aren't that bad.

For the people that got their replacement in the past week or so, how long was the time between you made the call to get the replacement to actual delivery of the unit?
I called and made a replacement order on Tuesday thinking it's next day replacement which isn't the case cause they said it's back ordered and should be a few more days.
BTW, any way to track the replacement using the DPS number provided?

I was doing this through email and I got my replacement next day.
I don't know how to track the replacement using the DPS number but if you know your customer number or have set up an account in Dell's system you might want to give Check Order Status a try.

I called for a replacement for my replacement over 3 weeks ago. As soon as I opened the first replacement I tried the d-pad... Same problem as the other one, only worse. So I called right away and requested another replacement. I then waited, and waited. About 1 1/2 weeks later, I sent an email. The guy said it would ship the next day and I should be able to track it, blah blah. So then waited another week and a half, and finally gave them a call. My second request for a replacement was so close to the first replacement being shipped that dispatch cancelled the order. So I was waiting for nothing. So now, I've got another coming, but I still don't see it on the tracking site as of yet. It's kind of frustrating. Dell needs to have "Dell Stores" like Gateway does... But oh well, that's my story.
I'm curious to know if I am expected to send everything back or just the unit, cuz I've read about some other people on here saying the Dell rep told them only to send back the unit, so if that's the case, and extra battery would be handy...
Anyways... kimcheeboy, I'll let you know how long it takes...
My opinion of the D-Pad: It's not the greatest. I don't think an axim exists with a perfect D-Pad. The latest one works better but still doesn't have a definitive click without the occasional enter. I think that's just the way it is. I do use it mostly for ups and downs. My real issues were when I was playing games etc.

I called and said my D-Pad would not function in the right direction. If it did, it would only do so occasionally. It's irritating in a fps (first person shooter) when you can only move left forward and back. She then made me do a hard reset even though I said it has nothing to do with the software. After that she said it would be replaced.

so how long ago did you buy your initial Axim? i heard that Dell only sends out brand-spanking-new replacements if you ordered yours within the last month. is this true?
Not for me, I think it's a toss up though. I've heard that as well. I believe it's at Dell's discretion. If they have refurbs ready then they'll probably send that out. If they don't have any refurbs ready they'll probably send a new one.
