Is the upgrade from PPC2002 to 2003 worth it?

Hello Everyone,

Newbie here. Just got my X5(400mhz, 64mb, 48mb) and it is running PPC2002 version 3.0 build 11171.

I have found the 2003 upgrade for $10.

Is this upgrade worth bothering with? The main thing I would like to improve is the web browser. It currently has the Dell WiFi card which currently works great. I'm just not thrilled with the way Internet Exploder renders web pages.

Sorry if this is a total dunce question.

Thanks in advance!

WM2003 has no upgrade to PIE. There were supposed to be upgrades related to communications protocalls, but I don't think there was much difference, really. Also, I think WM2003 was .Net based whereas this could be added to PPC2002.

If all your software runs Ok on PPC2002 then you don't really need it, but if there's software you want that runs on WM2003 and above then get it.

I have a copy I bought (but haven't installed) just in case I run into some real reason to upgrade...but that hasn't happened yet.

Chris...

it depends - if all you want is an improved browser, then IMO, upgrading is not just worth it...

like say, you only use your handheld for calendar/task/contact management; then 2002 would be more than enough

>WM2003 has no upgrade to PIE.

This is NOT correct. The IE on PPC2003 is a BETTER version over the 2002. In fact, it now reports version 4.1 instead of 3.1 or something. I remember when I got my version of X5 with 2002 in it and then upgraded, I actually SPOTTED many details in the way IE renders better on 2003.

>I think WM2003 was .Net based

No, it was not. The user has to still install it.

Personally, I upgraded to 2003 and I like it very much. It looks better too. Better fonts and colors and everything.

WM2003 came with my x50 and I have had no problems with it. Everything seems to be running great and IE and the apps have good rendering and I am enjoying my x50 with WM2003 immensely

You can go with something like NetFront for your browsing needs if you do a lot of surfing. I enjoy the PIE in WM2003 a lot more than in PPC2002 and I think there is a difference between the two but not much.

What about landscape mode? I know that WMP will support it.

i think landscape is only included on wm2003SE. you will need a third party app for this feature on wm2003.

Windows Media Player will support landscape mode...it will automatically render the video for you into landscape mode so I don't think you have a choice at it trys to be intuitive.

I have WM2003 (not SE) and when I played a video with WMP and set it for full screen it went into landscape mode automatically. I don't think there is the SE version for the X5...only WM2003.

I never really gave much thought to landscape mode using PIE. My thoughts were always as long as the web page fits my screen then why have landscape mode?

Since we are on the subject of PIE and landscape mode and all this stuff, maybe you can answer a question for me...when I goto msn.com I cannot view their video highlights from their website. I am sure this is a problem with PIE but do you know if NetFront would support the streaming video clips I am trying to view...or any other browser I could research that would do what I am trying to do?

not true..with landscape..on certain website..u can view more text without scrolling to much.

im not sure if netfront can view msn video on the webpage...u may want to email their support about that...but i highly doubt it.
