Worried questions about a new-to-me Axim

Hey all, i've been lurking on this site for a while now. Been trying to reconcile my buyer's remorse and get an Axim. Finally i decided to go half with my mother as a graduation present to me.

It's ordered, and hopefully coming in either monday or tuesday. It's a refurbished unit, couldn't bring myself to buy a new one.

Anyways, i have a couple of questions. First, Has anyone here who owns a Mac been able to get their Axim and activesync to work with VirtualPC (and Win 98se)? I've looked around the net and haven't been able to find any info on how to set it up. I could sure use some instruction here. I'd prefer not to have to use my P.O.S. pc (win98se, 166Mhz) to sync and install files. Or shell out $70 for PocketMac (kind of expensive for the bugginess i've heard about). Plus i won't have access to my MP3 files on my PC (can't figure out file sharing yet.).

I was thinking about getting a 6in1 card reader for my Mac for any SD or CF cards for the Axim, but then i don't know what i'd do if the app i wanted to install wasn't a stand alone app, or a .cab file...

Oh ya, my next question. I want to use my Axim as a checkbook register, and i read on this site that MS Money for PPC works great as a basic register... but on MS's site, it says you need the desktop version... is this true? is there another freeware checkbook register i could use?

Alright, i think that's enough for now. Sorry about the lengthy post. I'm just paranoid about things when i buy them.

Thanks in advance for any and all help I get.

If you are using MacOS X you might consider using SynCE
I havn't tried it, but it says it does support MacOS X

I use SynCE in linux, and it works great

http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/
http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/macosx.php

Might need to do a spot of compilation though :-\

Hope this helps (dont know anything about that MS money thing though :)

Thanks jbit!

it looks just geeky enough for me to try at a later date...

since i'm moving a few days after i get my Axim, i'll probably just sync it with my windows maching temporarily so i can install the street map software, and quickly load up my mp3's...

if anyone else has any info on my questions, please let me know :)

again, thanks for the quick reply jbit :D

Win95B would probably run a whole lot faster on that old PC you have.
For virtual PC emulation, check if they emulate the USB port because if they do you have a chance at sync.
I've heard some bad stuff about Money. I forgot if it was slow or if it was some other problem. But Money and Quicken are both worth a try for balancing a checkbook.

hey, thanks centrifuge41 :)

I'll check out the USB port emulation with VPC (they allow you to print to USB printers and use other devices like scanners and supposedly palm handhelds.,.. i was just wondering if anyone on this site has ever successfully sync'd)

and i'm deffinately going to give Money a try, maybe when i get to work i'll splurge for pocket quicken... my only concern was that microsoft mentioned something about having to have the desktop version of money to use pocket money... does anyone know if this is just for syncing? or are there other reasons?

again, thanks for the reply centrifuge41 :D
