Upgrading from A04 to A05 hlp plz!

Here is my delimma, I have found one of the coveted dell upgrade cd's in a yardsale bargain bin, I've owned an axim x5 since june or july 2003, Due to situations beyond my control I was never able to partake in the offer of the pocket pc 2003 upgrade program. I was told that it was offered for a couple months then removed from the website never to be seen again. Here's what I've managed to come up with. I was junk hunting and came across a bin of cd's and held within this bin was a cd titled "Aximx5 Upgrade Backup" I purchased it figuring i'd give it a try and see what could happen, since I missed the sale of the CD and it's no longer offered I figured what the heck... only 20 bucks.. and low and behold it's the coveted upgrade cd that I missed out on.

However there were no instructions or anything with this cd. I have 1 file that I was able to pull off this pretty beat up cd. (R64365.exe) when run it looks like it is the pocket pc 2003 upgrade patch for the A02 model of the axim x5, which is my factory tagged model. Which has been upgraded to rom version A04 the most recent upgrade offered in general downloads under my service tag.

When i run the software, everything runs fine. It extracts and starts up, then proceded to check my version, i click next, upgrade rom, and then it finally comes to settle on an error once it detects the rom my axim is running and gives me the following error and then cancels out of the program. Error is as follows.

"the procedure CANNOT proceed due to the following reason: *You cannot upgrade Microsoft Pocket PC 2002(A04) to Pocket PC 2003(A05)."

What does this mean and why am i gettin this message. PLZ HLP.

you might be getting that error because you extracted only one .exe (R64365.exe) from the CD and trying to run that individually (maybe it needs to call other files to run properly).

see if the attached Dell X5 2003 upgrade instructions help.

To the mods: I have the X5 2003 update.. is it ok to post a link to that here for the x5 ppl who might need it?

No, it's not ok since it is a licenced product.

Well Gigi, how the heck are those of us who need the update able to get it if it's no longer available? One would think the license is null and void if it's no longer being sold!! You answer is no help.

AK, is there another way to reach you bside this site?

It is sometimes found on Ebay and in BST forums. I empathize with you; it's not your fault you cannot get it from Dell. However, it IS a licenced product and as such, cannot just be freely given away.

must be nice to be one of those lucky few folks who were in the country when this was being offered while some of us were off pulling duty out of the states.

i love how mods automaticly wave the flag when someone wants to share information. especially since both Dell and microsoft has given it's customers who were unable to get ahold of that update the proverbial finger.

This is not a WAREZ SITE and i had no intention of using it as such, however on the other end of the spectrum take a look at how many people out there ARE using a copy of windows that probably shouldn't be.

As of right now everyone's pretty much given me the finger when i try to talk about this subject, and here it is right back at you.

all i wanted was help for my horribly overpriced, unsupported PDA. i'll be sure to keep you all in mind when i decide to purchase a HP here in the next few days if i can't find the help i need.

PdaProblems,

It's really very simple. The upgrade can't just be given out over the forums, as it's not legal to do so. Obviously, Aximsite doesn't want to be involved in anything illegal, or anything that might get us into trouble with Dell. Consequently, Gigi told you it was not ok, and explained the reason for it. She then pointed you to places you could get it.

So I don't think we're being unreasonable at all; quite the opposite, in fact.

I agree with Gigi.. since it is a licensed product it shouldn't be given away on an open forum..

What I thought was that since 2003 upgrades are device specific, and the X5 owners ARE entitled to the upgrade Dell should host it on their site. I hear that they did host it but later for some reason (can anybody tell me why?) they took it off their site. Now whats gonna happen to those who didnt get the upgrade in time. Dell shouldn't just forget about those ppl.

It's really incredibly simple, but "we" try to interpret the situation to fit our needs.

The product is a commercial piece of software which is no longer for sale from Dell.

Just because "I want it" and "Dell doesn't sell it" doesn't make the piracy legal, as much as we might like. No matter what arguments you can come up with to try and justify it to yourself.

Software piracy is software piracy and we don't want it here.

Akheron> A popular theory is that Dell removed the download from their website because people had hacked into it and figured out a way to get it free. So those that WERE into software piracy may have ruined it for everyone.

Well, I believe it was free for a limited number of people who bought it within a certain time period, just like it is for WM5.
