My battery meter doesn't appear in the top bar.

It used to, but I set it aside for a few months and when I picked it back up it was having problems (and I had to replace the back-up battery) so I did a hard reset. Problem is now the battery meter doesn't appear in the top bar. What gives? Anything I can do?

Also - on an unrelated note, what are your thoughts on upgrading to PPC 2003... I would like to install some software that is only compatible with 2003.

Turn the unit on, and tap Start, then Settings, then the System tab, and then tap Switcher Bar. That should bring the switcher bar, the brightness control, and the battery icon to the top of your screen.
