X5 Upgrade for Dummies
Hey guys (and gals),
I'm a newbie in this arena. I have a dell Axim X5 with the following;
A02
Intel PXA255
Pocket PC version 3.0.11171 (build 1178)
I would love to upgrade because I think I need to in order to purchase a SD wireless communication card. Everything I read says that I need to be running Pocket PC 2003 and I assume that 2003 versus 3.0 are different operating systems.
Could some one point me to an easy to understand location that would explain how to acheive this process?
Thanks.
BreaMark

It won't matter. The hardware on the X5 is not sdio capable so it doesn't matter which OS you are running, an SD WiFi card is not going to work.

Oh sorry, I skipped the part where you wanted it for a SD Wireless card. For an SD wireless card you need something called SDIO. Which is HARDWARE and NOT software. So you would basically need it all replaced.
"How is SD IO different from SD Memory?
SD IO is a superset of the SD Memory specification. It enables I/O expansion for peripherals such as serial, modem, or Ethernet cards. SD Memory is only used for storage card peripherals. An SD IO capable card slot can support SD memory devices, while an SD Memory capable slot may not support an SD IO peripheral."

CF Card
GUYS,
Then how about a CF Wlan card? I see them advertized on Ebay and they state that its X5 compatable.
Do I need to do any upgrades for this to work?
Thanks.
ps: I found this link for an "easy" upgrade. What do you think?

Yeah CF totally works. It's bigger when compared to the SD you were looking at, but it is cheaper as well. That's exactly how I'm replying to this post as well!
As for now, don't trust any upgrade but the ones from dell. The reason is because if something goes wrong with the file, it will turn your AXIM into a brick. So just becareful with that. I think it voids warranty as well, actually I'm pretty sure it does.

I was using a DEll wireless CF card (it's not the best) on my X5 with Windows 2002 and it worked. So I don't believe you need to upgrade for that reason.
I used this "easy upgrade" process to upgrade my X5 (ROM A03) yesterday. I had no problems and pretty much followed the directions - except I didn't remove the batteries (steps #6 & #7). I did make sure my main battery was fully charged. I also found a couple of sellers on ebay with the upgrade CD - but none would respond to my questions, so I did it this way. I wasn't worried about voiding my warranty - as it had long since expired. The hardest part is holding in the four buttons - but after a couple of tries I did it. Good Luck

Upgrade Worked
Just got done with the upgrade and the button pushing WAS the hardiest part of the whole thing.
I now have Pocket PC Version 4.20.1081 with A05.
I should be getting my CF wireless card in the next couple of days (purchased through Amazon). I'll let you know how that turns out.
Thank you everyone for your help. :approve:

After spending an hour with Dell this week on the phone, and willing to pay for the upgrade and getting no where with them I really don't feel too bad about the situation.

I have an Axim with the first edition of 2003 (not the second edition/upgrade) and I have no problems using my CF Wireless card.
