Being a moderate computer user I am slowly trying to become an itermediate user. I just purchased a Socket low power wlan cf card. I went to their site to make sure I had the latest drivers(based on their site and my cards P/N # I had the latest, installed the software, and then tryed connecting to a hot spot(free one and non encrypted). The program indicated that I had a moderate to good connection so I then click on internet explorer and tried to connect to a site. I get "The page you are looking for cannot be found". HELP did I do something wrong. I tried following all the instructions. I have a Dell Axim5 with 2002 software. I followed the instructions the my device and it does seem to be working except for me connnecting to the internet. Here is the Version Info on the card as it comes up on my PPC

Client: 3.02
Driver Name: WLAGS46B
Driver Version: 8.22
Socket WLAN Card ID 14 Var 1 ver 00.04
Encryption: WEP 128 bit
Rates: 1,2,5.5,11 Mbit/s

I have checked out that link and will visit it again. I did a lot of research prior to buying and installing so I could try and avoid some of the problems I have seen here in the forums. But with my luck I have fallen prey to not understanding everything that is said. I am a hands-on type person and seeing is easier then listening. Thanks again and I will re-look at the link and see if I can find my mistake.

The only other thing I can think of is the WiFi hotspot you are trying to connect to is not allowing you to connect. Maybe you can get with whomever is technically inclined at that particular hotspot to see if they can help you associate to the WiFi connection.

Thanks I will try. I was going to do the home wi-fi set-up later on but may do it sooner just to check my new PPC wlan card.

One question though. If the card seems to be working and it is saying I have an "excelent" connection with the host, it list the host name and ip address and all that would you say that the card was installed ok and is working? Is there anyway to know if a hotspot would need a Data Security key?

Is it a 'real' IP or does it start 169 (which is self assigned)?
If it is real, try going into the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server. On the Proxy server tab, check the top box (This network connects to the Internet) but leave everything else on this page blank. On the General tab, the name should be "My Work Network." OK and then select the Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists.

Are you sure that the WIFI settings is set on internet and not office? No idea if it actually does anything but it seems to help me to connect.

mine seems a little different.
Start, Settings, Connections (tab), [Here is where mine is different] I have the choice of AdvantGo connect, Beam, Connections, Network Adapters.
If I click on "Connections" I get three choices: connect to the internet, connect to work, and my network card connects to:
The firs two I have the choice of "Work settings" or "Internet Settings" is this where I should make the proxy server and call it "New"
When I click on new I get the three tabs you mentioned General, Modem, and Proxy Settings. I named it "My connection" and clicked on proxy settings tab and clicked the top box "This network connects to the internet" but can not click into the advance box

Oops, sorry. I missed the fact that you are using PPC02. On the Connections page, select My Work Network for the top two and Work for the third box. Tap on Modify for one of the top two boxes and make sure the Proxy Settings (tab) has the top box checked and everything else empty on that page. You don't need that 'Advanced' option (it's for an actual Proxy which I doubt that you are using). OK your way back to the Today page.
You'll need to use the Socket utility for other settings and that's where you should be sure that the card is getting a valid IP (something other than 169...).

I kind of figured that is what I needed to do. I had left so I did not see your reply but I took my PPC to Borders where I knew if I need help I might be able to find someone. It worked with out getting help. Their T-Moble log in screen came up so I know I was connected. The other hot spot I must need more info to log into their network. Thanks for all your help.

First you say the hotspot is non encrypted then you say you have WEP turned on in the Axim. Try turning it off and see what happens.

TomL 12953,
I will try that today. I am going back to the other free hot spot that I seem to connect to but can not access the web and seeing what happens. I also looked up hot spots and found a few more that are free. If I log on with no problems I will know it was just that one hot spot that I need to set differently our get encryption codes or someting. Getting connected at Border's Book Store let me know that the card was working so now I just need to learn what settings for the different locations.
Thanks to you all for being patient and giving me so much advice.
