Backup battery problem

Somehow, I lost my backup battery function. I don't know if this was due to a power surge or what. When I put in a fresh battery, after an hour or so, the battery power is 0% and I get a warning that the backup battery is very low. Can anyone help?

Somewhat common

Though it's possible you did somehow damage the batter compartment or circuitry, it's much more likely you've discovered the apparently random flaw in some X4 machines: The backup battery doesn't register properly. My wife's unit has this problem, while mine does not. Often times a soft reset on her device gets the indicator to show the correct backup battery status. It's annoying and Dell never came out for a fix (other than to swap your device).
