Bad Axim? Can't connect to PC. Please assist.

I recently purchased and received a Dell Axim X5 on Ebay. The device seems to be in excellent working condition, but I'm having one major issue, I can't connect to a PC. When I attach the included cable, I get a "USB Device Not Recognized". Here is the steps I have followed (in order):

1. I downloaded the Axim USB Driver from the Dell site. I installed on the PC.
2. I downloaded the ActiveSync software from Microsoft site (3.8) and installed on the PC.
3. When directed, I powered on the Axim, and plugged into the PC. It came back with a USB Device Not recognized errors.

I have tried the following additional steps:

1. I upgraded the Axim from A04 to A05 Rom
2. I tried previous and newer versions of ActiveSync
3. I have attempted to thhe steps on three seperate machines, all have the same problem. All machines were Windows XP with the newest updates installed.

I'd like to try connecting via IR, or another USB cable but I don't have access to one (or a PC that has IR). I purchased a wireless card for the device (Linksys WCF12 I believe) but it required activesync to install. So I can't even get than installed. My thought is that the problem is one of three things:

1. bad USB cable
2. bad port on PDA
3. OS compatibility issue

I have read some messages saying this may be a USB port issue, related to power usage. But I have the same problem on three seperate machines, and that was with the AC adapter plugged into the Axim. So I can't see this being the case. Can anyone comment or provide some suggestions? Should I be sending the PDA back to the seller on Ebay? I have not ever had this successfully connect to a PC, and it will be useless to me if I can't get it to talk to the PC.

Thanks in advance,
Jared

Really does sound like the sync cable, because if it was good, the drivers would recognize the cable (yes the CABLE by itself will come up as a port in Control panel-system-device manager-ports) whether the PDA was connected or not or if the port was bad or not. I have a cradle, so can not give much info on the cable until mine shows up (on order). "Buy another cable" is the cheapest advice....the sync via cradle with an X5 is effortless...not at all like what you are running into. It's not the OS, and the only check for the PDA is to try a cradle or another cable.
