Today I was doing some shopping and (coincidently?) every time I either enter or exit K-mart, GAP, OldNAvy and H&M the security system at the store's door went off. My Axim was in my jacket inner pocket...
Has this happen to someone else? Could my beloved Axim be the "culprit"?
I have gone into and out of both Old Navy and K-Mart several times with my Axim, and I have never had a problem. I don't think it has anything to do with it.
mhhh.. just for the record....I wasn't taking anything from the store!!! lol
What puzzles me is that the timing of alarms going off and me crossing the security points was uncannily coincidental and I have not figured out yet what else on me could be triggering the system.
did you buy anything that day? maybe something you bought the clerk forgot to deactivate the security tag on it?

I have never even looked how those work.

Have you recently bought a new wallet, belt, shoes, or jacket lately?
There are two kinds of security systems that stores use, radio frequency (Checkpoint) and magnetic (Sensomatic).
Some manufactures (wallets and belts) place both types of tags in their products. But if the store only has a Checkpoint system then only the Checkpoint tag is detuned. The Sensomatic tag will still be active.
Many shoes sold by K-Mart have the tags inside the soles of the shoes. Walmart has tags sewn in the labels of their jackets. Home Depot puts security tags inside some of their tools (I have had to detune a tape measure for a customer).
I have worked with both systems. The security companies have upgraded the systems so that cell phones, car keys, and electronics don't set them off any more.
If it really bothers you, then you can try a process of elimination. If you set off the alarm, take out you axim and go through without it. If it still goes off, go through without your wallet. If it still goes off, go through without your coat. If it still goes off, try putting you feet on their detuner pad (this worked for a customer who had put his workboots on layaway and K-Mart didn't detune them when he picked up the layaway).
If the store uses a Sensomatic system never put your wallet on their detuner without taking your credit card out first. Also, don't put your axim on a Sensomatic pad (remember, this system is magnetic).
Also, anything with a lot of wire can set them off. I used to work at circuit city, and the RF tags were basically a coil of VERY thin/small wire about 30 feet long. Anything that had around 30 ft of wire would set it off. So anytime someone bought speaker wire, phone cord, etc over about 25 feet....it would go off. So if anything you bought had a long wire, then that's probably it.
