ActiveSync says USB not supported

I sync my Axim with XP Pro via USB on my Dell Inspiron 7500. A problem that I had once has now happened again. Typically I sync at my desk with my Inspiron in the port replicator. The problem occured when I was at a customer's location. Here's what happened. After booting up I plugged in a USB device and I got a message like (I don't remember the exact message) "Another device is trying to access active sync" and my 2 choices are to retry or disconnect. Well retrying is not an option so my only option is to click on disconnect. When I do this and then open up ActiveSync connection settings, the check box for USB is greyed out and the note below says "USB not supported". The last time this happened I ended up removing and reinstalling ActiveSync. I was using version 3.6 then and am using 3.7 now. Is there another fix for this other than reinstalling ActiveSync?

One possibility: in ActiveSync on the PC, click File, Connection Settings and check box “Allow USB connection…”

[Added ijn edit: Sorry - I just read your post again and realize that's probably where you have the 'grayed out' choice. I originally thought it was when you are trying to use the 'Get Connected' choice.]

I've had trouble using the port replicator on my Latitude. It seems to be working now, but sometimes ActiveSync wouldn't see the device anymore... Sound kind of what you are dealing with. Since the last reformat of my laptop, it seems to be working find now.... I have no idea why...

USB Connection

I have had this problem before. It seems that on my AXIM the option (ActiveSYnc -> Tools -> Options -> Enable synchronization while cradled) to sync via USB has disappeared and only Desktop @19200 is present. Does anyone know how to get the USB option to return? I've tried reboot, hard reset, reinstall, etc and can't get the option ot return. I have a suspicion that is the reason I can't connect.
