Mad Why isn't SD slot suggested for PROGRAMS?

If the next generation of Axim's will do away with the CF slot AND the SD slots we have are NOT suggested to store program (seems DUMB to me!!!!!!) How is it the next generation WILL use the SD slots for program storage and DELL could not pull it off in the X5?

The design MUST be DEFECTIVE if the next generation WILL be able to use SD for programs.

Please post here a reply if you agree with above!!

Sez who? I, like many, have nearly all of their software on the SD card. Works like a charm.

Dell has problems with their SD slot when used with cheap SD cards like SanDisk ... Since they haven't been able to verify if its because of the cheap SD cards or their hardware doesn't like going that slow on the data transfers they just say its not supported ...

However if you have a good SD card like Lexar or SimpleTech that transfer at higher data rates you should not have a problems using the SD slot to store and run programs ...

Once I got rid of my SanDisk cards I've never had a problem running on the SD slot ...

This page of the support thread shows the speed of the SanDisk cards and why people think they are causing the problem ...

No problems here with a Sandisk 64mb sd card with my programs installed there. At the same time I have my Sandisk 512mb cf card with my mp3's installed and run mp3's and programs at the same time.

Moved to the Hardware Troubles forum.

I've had no trouble installing to the SD and CF slots. In fact Plus Sync & Go only works with either the SD or CF memory...

Exclamation

Hi, All:

I have had so much problems with SanDisk 256MB ones. I got a Lexar 256MB sd card and sinec have not had a single issue either with AXIM or my card reader. By the way the problem with SanDisk 256MN SD is not only with AXIM, it is also with several readers as well.

So you can buy the Lexar for $80 from CompUSA over the counter or buy it from Amazon for $70.

They'll always have somekind of memory slot in future models. I have an SD memory card and a CF WiFi card. I tell every application to install on the SD card. Some still insist on putting some of their parts and pieces in main memory. It has been suggested that "today" screen plugins should be installed in main memory. I tried installing tdlaunch on the SD and it crashed partway through the installation leaving some bits that don't function but can't be deleted or uninstalled either. Judging by everyone else's success with tdlaunch I theorized that it was an application that could not install on the SD.

I've not had many problems with the SD slot and installing programs. I have had issues with the card 128MB(sandisk is replacing). the problem was when I opened any program that searched for files like word,excel,notes...even if there was nothing stored on the card it would take forever to open the program. As soon as I remomved the card the process would speed up immediately. SAndisk is replacing the card...we'll see....

But again no issues with installing programs t the card.

It's not that the SD card isn't recommended for programs, it's that ANY flash storage isn't recommended (be it SD, CF, Built-in) They are just suggesting that for best performance you should load your programs into RAM (Main memory) and store the data on the SD/CF card.... but that said, the difference in speed isn't so great that it would seriously impede your use.

I keep most of my programs in main memory, and a few less used ones on Built-in and use the SD for data.
(My CF is just used for Wireless)
