On my display at the bottom I am seeing black streaks coming up in rows, does any one else have simular problem or do I have a display problem and need to call Dell? I especially notice this in microsoft reader.

Thanks

I have those faint shadows too, but I think it's the nature of the light source, and not a "defect"

I have the same "problem"

I called Dell and the service rep offered to replace the unit.

I posted comments on Aximsite and Dell and the consensus is that the black and white areas on the bottom of the screen are normal. I'm bothered by the black and white areas if I pay attention to them and wonder if the unit is defective.

I think what's hard to determine by talking about the problem is if all the screens look the same or some screens have this problem worse than others. It would be nice if someone would photograph the bottom of their screen (looking down a bit) so everyone could see what is typical - normal...

Looks like people have all sorts of other problems with their Axim so I think if I sent the machine back, I might get another with other problems. Some people end up with refurbs...

So, unless it gets worse, I can live with the "normal" black and white areas.

I've taken a pic of my screen to show what I suspect are the normal "black streaks." Until I read another thread and actually looked, I was not even aware of them. The photo isn't the best quality - it's a new camera and I haven't learned how to get the most out of it. Obviously, I couldn't use a flash since that would overwhelm the light from the screen but I made up a white today screen and put a white menu bar at the bottom with ICbar. Also, probably because of the shutter speed, there is some zebra striping across the main part of the screen which is not at all obvious 'in real life,' but the banding at the bottom is pretty representative of what I see. This was taken with the camera slightly angled down. Straight on, the bands are nearly impossible to see.

So, without further ado:

Thanks for the photo! That looks like the banding I see. And you're right, it's not that noticeable unless you look for it.

So unless mine gets worse, i'll keep it.

After my earlier post, I also found the thread which mentioned the FAQ here which gives the explanation of the 6 LEDs at the bottom which are the light source for the screen. I decided to make up a graphic to show people what this means. Here it is:

I have the same problem, mine isn't that bad or noticeable. I think that Dell should fix the problem in new units

Its not a problem or defect its just the way they were made and are lit up.

Exactly. A fix would probably result in a more expensive or less bright screen (or both).

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the display is suppose to be this way. I did however call Dell on this and of course they knew nothing as far as if it's suppose to be this way, so there are sending me a replacement, but I think I'll keep my current unit as it is working fine and return the replacement. Great Picture of shadows.

Ranbart-

You are going to be in the enviable position of being able to compare two Axims side-by-side.

So, please do the comparison and please share your observations. Are they identical? Or is there a difference. My guess is that one will be "worse" or more noticeable than the other. But you are the only one who can say with certainty.

Please let us know!

Yeah, well, how do they get those flashlights on the bottom of the Ax? ;)
