Targus cf modem

Just received it today but when I plug it in axim doesn't "auto recognize". Am I supposed to put axim in cradle and then put the cf modem in? Shouldn't it recognize similiar to how plug and play works in win98se?

If I remember correctly, the only thing I did:

turn on the Axim
plug in the cf card
plug in the phone jack both on Axim, then wall
went to settings then connections on Axim
tapped new connection and then selected the modem

you are talking about the targus compact flash 56k modem (?) If so, then I don't understand the 'putting it in your cradle' part of the post. You wouldn't need the cradle if using the 56k modem.

Yeah, the Axim won't tell you that the modem has been inserted, but when you go the the connections to set up a dial up connection, one of the modem choices you get is the Targuc CF Modem.

thanks, I get it now. I thought that it was going to be like win98se where it will actually have a window that says, "detected new hardware". Now, how do I disable the area code and etc?

On the top where the start for the start menu is, there is a little bubble looking icon. It appears to let you know you are connected, then you can hide it. If you click on it, it will reveal the menu telling you that you are connected. There will be a disconnect icon in there as well.

I can't check exactly because I no longer have my modem, but did you try going to the today screen and seeing what you have in the top menu with the start, clock, etc.? That is where I always went when I needed to disconnect. You could also try going to the connections setting and see what it says when you are online. Sorry I can't provide more detailed descriptions.

I don't know if your modem shipped with a manual but, it's written in there how to do all of this stuff....sometimes they forget to put these in the packaging....if you have a fax number and need a copy of the manual, just let me know

I have the manual, did a search on targus's support and it doesn't talk about it. The only ref to it is under the "entering a data call" which talks about a connection icon in the system tray and to tap disconnect to end the connection. I have loaded icbar and when you tap the drop down menu there is no ref to any connection. I just can't seem to see it.

okay...I hooked mine up to check how to disconnect....sorry, wasn't able to answer you back in the other post because I couldn't find my modem in my bag of stuff.

Once you are connected and are viewing a website....at the top of your screen, next to the speaker icon, there should be two arrows...one points left, one points right. Tap on those arrows once and eventually (within a couple of seconds), a screen will pop up and one of the choices is to END. Tap END to disconnect. Another couple of seconds later, you will hear a sound (for fun, I call it a little trinkle sound), and then you are disconnected. You have to be patient because each of these steps does not happen the instant you press END...you need to wait a few seconds before it actually happens. Just give the modem time to respond to your tap.

You are right about the manual...it sucks at explaining this....most likely, they try to generalize the explanation because different pocket pc's disconnect differently. So, they just give their best shot at an explanation. (?)

Hope this helps...let us know if you need more help. I'll try my best!!

I am connected via the axim now. You mentioned an arrow beside the speaker icon but there is none there even though I "surf around". basically what I see (starting from the right) is "x", down arrow (icbar dropdown menu), house (returns me to main screen), and then speaker icon, time, the word "internet explorer" and then two double overlapping arrows pointing downward (drop down menu for axim). Then starting from the bottom right, pencil icon (I use block recognizer, page with red "x" on it (refresh page), file folder (favorites), house (homepage, or course this site), sheet with circular arrowsne pointing up and one pointing down (refresh too?), arrow facing left (which if I continue to tap, it eventually grays out), "tools", "view".

I connect on by going into start, settings, connections, connections. I use the first drop down menu (internet settings) and connect.
When I connect, a window comes up "network log on" and I enter my internet user name and password.
Another window comes up, "connecting, connecting to telus, dialing from work using targus cf pocketmodem56k..dialing
when it connects, it shows connected and I go back to the settings, connections window

The only way I can disconnect now is that I pull the plug...which I don't really think is the way I am supposed to do it.

It is just funny that icbar wouldn't have any listing of the connection in the drop down menu...isn't it supposed to list all programs running?
