disconnected when files copying

Hi,

There is no way to copy/paste files from my Inspiron8000 (Dell) to my Axim (my first PPC and i 'am not sure to have made the good choice)...

After few seconds, ActiveSync is disconnected...i can just copy very little files during this few seconds but no bigger (such as mp3 by example)...

There is a lot of testimonies like this on Dell support forum but
that's denied by Dell when i call the support team...

Please tell me if you have the same problem or give an idea better than buy an iPaq !!

ActiveSync works fine in all other aspects ? How have you connected the Axim to the PC ? Have you made sure that you dont have problems with the PC or its USB ports ?

No, I mean if you dont try to copy any files, does the ActiveSync stay connected ? Are you using a USB hub ? Have you tried connecting the cradle to a different USB port ? If you are connecting it to USB ports in the front of the PC, have you tried to connect it to the USB ports at the rear (which are directly connected to the M/B) ?

If you open up the Explore window, does the ActiveSync stay connected if you dont do anything at all ? Do you have any timeouts set in the USB settings in the Hardware Device manager ? Are all USB drivers working properly ?

As you can see, a lot of issues to cover/troubleshoot.....:D

(excuse my english)

ActiveSync stay connected (1 day without problem...if i don't try to copy files)

everything is ok with synchronization (contacts, outlook...)

i have tried with the 2 ports in back of my Inspiron8000

if i open up the Explore window, ActiveSync stay connected if i dont do anything at all

drivers are all installed by Dell (Inspiron8000 is a Dell product, Axim is a Dell product)

that's a nightmare

The problem is with your USB ports on your PC. I have a Dell 8100 that I connect my Axim to and I have the exact same problem. I can only transfer small files. Large files disconnect Activesync. So I took my Axim to work. I transferred a video file that was 26 MB with no problem on my work PC.

I am having the same problem. Using AXIM 5 with Dell Dimension 4550, I just cannot transfer large files(size greater than 100MB). Activesync just disconnects the device after transferring 30 to 60 MB. If I do not try to transfer file, everything just works fine for weeks. The AXIM is directly connected to the rear USB port and all service packs and drivers are up to date. My suspicion is that it has something to do with USB 2.0. When I used AXIM with my older Dell Dimension XPST 450, as long as I connected it directly to the USB port, I could transfer files as large as 200MB without problems.

Not that it's any consolation, but it is not a problem between the Axim and the other Dell products, it's a problem with ActiveSync and those PCs. It wouldn't matter if you were using an iPaq or Toshiba, you'd still be having the problems.

After searching other forums I found a solution that worked for me. It was suggested that some OEM USB ports are very under powered and that plugging into a self-powered hub as opposed to the bus powered ports would solve the problem. My old palm m500 would not work on my hub so it was plugged ito the back of my Dell 4100. I assumed that the Axim cradle would also like to be plugged into the back of the machine. But it had the self disconnect and large file transfer problems as stated above. However when I shutdown and moved the plug onto the Hub. Voila problems gone. No more disconnects and I transfered a 100 MB file to My SD card.

Hope that this helps others.
