recording a sound note?

I just took delivery on two 400MHz Axims about a week ago, one for my wife and one for me. We are both quite happy so far and the systems have worked flawlessly. We upgraded our warranty to a no questions asked next day replacement should anything fail or break. This morning I tried to record a voice note on my system for the first time and using the default settings I get just the faintest of voice interspersed with lots of crackling and static. My wife's does the same thing! Are my settings just off, is this just what the speaker is normally like with voice recordings or should I have Dell send me two new units for delivery on Tuesday?

Thanks in advance,

John N. Wright

Go to settings, then to system, then to microphone

You can then set the gain on the slider shown

At the bottom of the screen there is a link to input

In input you can change the recording format

Hope that helps

Thanks,
The gain was set to max and when I dropped it down one or two notches most of the static and clicking went away. I was a little supprised by how faint the playback is even when the volue was set at maximum. Do most users use earphones if they are going to use the Axim to play back recordings or sounds?:)

I nearly always do. I have a set of earbuds that I carry with me always. I also keep headphones (with a volume control & mute button) both at the office and at home.

Thanks for the input regarding the microphone. I started to experience static in WMP while playing mp3's after doing a hard reset and thought that I had blown my speaker somehow. I'm not sure how the microphone has anything to do with speaker static while playing back mp3's but whatever, it worked.

Its not the mic. Its the handler. Try a third party recorder.

If I understand correctly your saying it is WMP? If so why have I just started having problems with it. After posting my previous note I had a reoccurance. It is also transmitted through earbuds.

The player makes no difference with my unit. I downloaded withmp3 and I still get static. I even changed the default player to different formats and it still gives static.

OK, I give up. Changed the file format to WMA and now everything plays fine. Darn gremlins.
