Different ROM versions

Aloha to all!!

Well...after many trials to get on the net..I'm finally thinking of giving the A03 ROM update a try...

But after checking out DELL downloads...I found quiet a few files??

1. Can someone explain them to me...and does the 27MB A03 contain ALL the updates??

R58550.EXE : A02 27MB
R59756.EXE : A03 27MB
R59395.EXE : IrDA fix 157KB (what's that...infra red??)
R59758.EXE : ??? 448KB

2. So, what's this LATEST R59758? It Says in the info: "New and improved features" for A03 ROM

Is it like a patch for the original A03??

3. I have NO CF or SD card.....and all my programs are on my Axim...I guess i will lose ALL my data on it??

4. So...right now I am doing a FULL BACKUP to my PC using active sync ( painfully slow!! :rolling: ). Will i be able to RESTORE ALL MY FILES after the rom update using active sync and my PC.

5. And , had I a CF or SD card...could I have done a full backup to it?? Would it be FASTER??

6. And I've seen many programs and software on "Pocket PC thoughts " for data backup...and they're not cheap...what's their advantage over the regular backup i'm doing now??

Thanks.....:crooked:

Yes to #3, but the restore from ActiveSync should restore them all. A few people have had problems.

Faster, yes, but some people have also had problems restoring from these backups. Depending on how many programs/files you have stored on your Axim, and how much space is available on your main memory (RAM), you can do the Dell backup to it and then copy the file to your PC. After the upgrade, you can copy it back to restore from it.

Some people claim these work better than the M$ backup (ActiveSync) or the Dell backup. IMO, all software can fail in certain cases. I figure the two options available already are sufficient.

Cool...thanks man...!!!

By the way...is it IMPOSSIBLE to browse the net with rom A02??

I mean...with my axim in the cradle....and connected to my PC..which is online...I CANNOT browse the net....

And one LAST thing...

Why does activesync AUTOMATICALLY connect my PC to the net wheever it syncs...

Eventhough i changed the options to:

Sync only MANUALLY...

and unchecked:

sync when connected to my PC every 5 minutes??

No, it's not impossible although Pocket IE has problems with a lot of sites. It sounds like one of your settings is wrong if you cannot reach any sites. Look in Settings, Connections, Connections to make changes, however, I don't use dialup so I'm not sure how these should be set. You can also get a different web browser - NetFront works at many more sites but it is not free.

Before trying to set that up, however, the fix for your second problem is to disable the pass through option for web access. Look at this website, item 14 under Synchronization Errors for details. It looks like you have to make a choice between these two options (using the web from your Ax and not having it attempt to dial when you sync).

I don't have a modem (I use cable broadband), so I cannot really advise you on that. One point, though, browsing the web with the Axim isn't all that satisfying. Most websites are not formatted for the small screen so you have to do a lot of scanning back and forth or pay for a service like Thunderhawk (too expensive, if you ask me) to do the reformatting for you. The main reason for having a modem, I think, is if you travel and want to be able to dial up your ISP with your Axim for email.

Not a problem at all. If I didn't want to be bothered, I wouldn't have responded in the first place. ;) If I'm near my computer (fairly frequent) and I know the answer, I'll usually respond.

I agree, it is a really neat addition to the Axim. The delete button is shift+backspace (in the upper right corner - this is also the case on the virtual keyboard on the Axim).

And, you are welcome :)
