Last night my X5 battery died (I think). I got up this morning and it was completely dead. I have one of the generic Wall adapter/USB cable chargers. I plugged the cable into the X5, but not the adapter. I mention this because the battery was fully charged last night and I wonder if the unplugged cable somehow drained it.
When all is plugged in properly now the battery indicator screen says it is charging, but it never comes up off of zero % (more than 12 hours later). The orange light under the power button doesn't even come on.
Can anyone tell me what the pin out of the USB connector is so I can check for voltage?
Anyway, I understand from reading other threads that the generic adapters are not powerful enough to charge a fully dead battery. I have a universal charger with many tips. What adapter voltage and capacity (Amps) are needed? I think mine is 1500mA (1.5A). What should the tip polarity be?
I need help as my cradle and main charger are at work which is an hour away.
Just remembered that the generic charger came with a car socket, so worse come to worse I should still be able to make it to work without losing everything.
P.S. if it's completely dead, you probably have already lost everything via a hard reset. I hope you have a recent backup.

It must have been right at the last when I discovered it, I haven't lost anything yet. Also, when it reads correctly, the backup battery is still showing 100%.
My 'universal' adapter has settings for 4.5 or 6 volts. Would the 6 volt setting harm my X5, or should I try to charge with the 4.5 setting?
Neither is a great option but going over voltage is usually a bad idea with any equipment.

I have an old USB power cable from my X5, which has a USB connector on one end and an Axim barrel connector on the other end, for charging only from a USB port. It actually came with my Arkon Powered PDA Mount and supplied power to my Axim when mounted in my car.
I am now using an iPaq hw6515 device, which comes with an AC power cable that has a barrel connector on one end that is dual-purpose. You can either plug the barrel connector directly into the dock for supplied power or, add the HP charging adapter to the barrel plug so you can plug this directly into the iPaq for charging without the dock.
The HP barrel connector has a power tip spec of 5 VDC, 2 AMP, + Tip and is exactly the same size as the Axim barrel plug (I confirmed this by installing the HP charging adapter on the Axim barrel plug).
From what I have read here, the Axim power tip spec is 5.4 VDC, 2.41 AMP, + Tip.
Question:
Can I use this cable to power my iPaq in the car?
By using this cable, will it actually supply the full 5.4 VDC and 2.41 AMPS and if so, will this minor difference do any damage to the iPaq?
OR
Will the iPaq only draw the required voltage/ampres to the maximum of 5V/2A?
In my view, the 5.4V/5V difference is insignificant. Most of these adapters functionally supply a range of voltage and the actual voltage supplied drops with a greater load. As for the amperage, the PPC will only draw as much current as it needs but I suspect the car adapter is incapable of supplying even the 2A (I have several of these that I got for my X5 and/or iPaq and they only supply 900mA to 1.2A). Does the adapter have the specs printed on it (many do, but unfortunately, not all of them).

Well, the actual power source will be from the cigarette lighter in my truck. This goes to the Arkon Powered PDA Mount. Then from the mount there is a USB jack. Depending on which device you purchase this mount for, they will supply a 6" cable that is USB on one side and device specific on the other end (in my case, for the Axim X5).
Knowing this, I suspect that the voltage/ampres being supplied (pushed out of) the mount is always the same (within reason) and that the only thing that changes between the cables, dependant on each different unit, is the device-specific plug and pin assignments into this plug.
Therefore, deductive reasoning would assume that:
a) if this Axim cable, and more particularily the barrel plug physically fits on the HP adapter and,
b) both cables use a positive tip arrangement
That this HP adapter should work on the Axim cable to supply power to my iPaq.
if the voltage is correct then it will only draw the amount of current it needs
I= current V=voltgage R= resistance in ohms Basic ohms law for closed loop circuit
I=V/R R= resistance of the load which is the pda+battery which will change depending on how low the battery is. V=5volts which should stay a fixed value.
