What's too much voltage?

I have a "universal" wall adapter I want to use with my X5. Choices are 4.5 or 6 volts. Is 6 volts toomuch, or should I use the 4.5? If 4.5, will that charge a fully discharged battery?

Thanks.

Roy

I would try 4.5 first to be safe and see if it will charge if it takes too long to charge then I would try the 6 volts briefly at first with pda turned off and feel the battery to see if its getting excessively warm if not warm to the touch you should be ok but try at your own risk

Why not use the proper adapter? To little voltage will destroy electronics the same as to much voltage. Is it really worth it?

If you are going to use this adapter, you would be best off using it at 6.0 VDC and using a +5V regulator to bring the voltage down. 6V is too high and 4.5V is too low.

do you have a volt meter? I found that the adapters are most of the time not up to specs. I get +/-.5 to 1.5 volt diference on adapters.

PocketBrain's +5V regulator is a good idea. I've used them for other aplications and they work gr8.

By the way, check out the Tips from the Trenches link in my signature for an example. I made an in-line regulator ("The Scorpion") and have successfully used it. I recently doubled-up on the heat sink, since the 7805 regulator is only rated to 1A and it get quite hot.

Thanks for all the input. The regulator idea sounds good.

Yes, I have a voltmeter. However, be aware that measuring the output of AC adapters with a voltmeter alone will NOT yield accurate results. You will not get an accurate reading without some kind of load.

Too true. I have a +6VDC power supply which reads +10V under no load. It supplies my USB hub/Axim charger hack. This underlines, too, why you need a regulator for an item such as the Axim, which is quite finicky. If the load changes, then the input voltage changes with it, and you may lose your power source. Assuming of course that you don't lose your Axim.
Build a regulator.

By the way, I have found that my X50 won't charge from anything under 4.8 volts and cuts off quite nicely just above 5.6V. My old Cassiopeia will recharge readily from a 4-AA NiMH pack (4.8V and down), but the Axim dislikes it. Not sure what the bounds of usable power inputs for the X5 series is, though. Grit your teeth and find out!
