Why won't my Axim connect?

I just installed a Targus 56K V.90 pocket modem. It dials out but will not connect to my ISP. Sometimes I get a message saying that my user name or password could be incorrect (I've checked both) and the other times it just disconnects after dialing for a while. I have no problems connecting to the same ISP and phone line with my Dell desktop. Help!

Need a little more info ...

Some ISP's require you to have certain software to be able to connect to their service ... AOL, Juno, Netzero etc etc .. Not sure if you use one of these services or not ...

Also the Targus modem does not have auto fallback speed ... Meaning if your trying to connect 56K and if it can't connect at that speed it won't automatically try a slower speed ... in the connection properties you can try something slower like 48.8 or 33.6 or whatever to see if a slower speed works ...
