SD card losing space...

Hi All,

I am afraid that I have to put myself also in the unhappy list of SD-card users who experiences strange behavoir...

First I had troubles losing everyhting on the SD-card once in a while, after using "Storage Tools" everything became a bit more stable but now it seems that my card is losing memory slowly...

I figured out that it has to do somehting with MagicSync and files I update on the card. The files get replaced, but the memory used to store the previous content is not released. Like the link is lost, but the data stays on the card. Storage Tools doesn't even see the problem.

I also use SanDisk 128MB, but I very much wonder if it is the memory card or Windows-CE driver for SD-cards....

anybody experiencing the same?
Jan

I've not experienced this with my Lexar SD So, with all the issues related to the SanDisk products, my uneducated guess would be the SanDisk card.

I'm getting the exact same thing using a Lexar 64mb. I was having problems with the entire disk becoming corrupt until I installed storage tools. I used storage tools to format it and now I'm having problems with disk space not recovering when I delete files. I've started making backups of my card just in case.

I did some more investigation and figured out that it only happens when you overwrite files or create files that are not finished. Like it makes a hidden temporary file first...
I would be interested to know what these memory cards have on inteligent. Meaning, do they have some logic on board to manage the content, like a hard disk, or is it just like a diskette... a simple storage place.

One problem is the losing of data on cards where I think Sandisk is to blame but can be solved with Storage Tools....

the other problem is losing disk space. Something I blame the Axim hardware or Windows CE where the space on the memory card is not cleaned correctly...

I did not lose any files since I used the Storage tools, but once in a while I need to reformat my disk just to get the free space back.

I wonder why it is so difficult to solve this... It must be solveble with software since a format can do it means it is just something on the level of the FAT where space is allocated but not assigned to a filename...

Mad Lost space on SD card

I have a San Disk 128MB SD card - supplied direct by Dell !! - and have experienced exactly the same problem; ie files disappear off the card for no apparent reason. Even worse - this does not free up the storage space - even though the files are no longer there, the available space on the card remains as before. (I am using a 'quality' file Explorer - Resco).
It seems that the only solution to recover the lost space is to re-format the card - however it is too soon to tell whether this problem will re-occur.

StorageTools has a panel to run a Defrag app. Give that a try and see if it brings back the lost memory space.
