Replaced battery Still getting Message

I bought an Axim X5 off Ebay and it works great, but even after replacing the circular battery, it still the warning message that the backup battery needs replaced or recharge. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Any help will help. Thanks!

make sure the battery is making good contact and make sure you didnt buy one thats been sitting on the shelf for over a year and it helps to do a soft reset after the new bub is installed

Thanks for getting back. I tried all that you wrote but still the message appears. The battery was fresh. I had to make sure becuase I have a few lying around. Is this a common problem with these units?

Backup Battery Charge Error

Are you getting any help with this problem? I'm having the same difficulty with my X5. We've replaced the backup battery but intermittently shows low or no power in the backup battery. After several soft restarts you'll get it to show full, but after a couple uses, it goes back to dead.

Obviously this makes the unit unreliable, and I've even lost all the data at one point. The irony is that the battery is not dead, it's just showing dead on the meter.

My ROM version is A04, wondering if sonething newer is available or would it even matter??

At least I'm not the only one with this problem.

The back up battery always says it's low and needs recharged or replaced, but I so far never lost any data in spite of the fact that the back up has never shown a bit of power. A soft restart is when you hold down that button on the side of the unit, right? Don't know for sure.

Other than that annoyance it works great, but as you say, it's unreliable. If I get any tips on this problem I will send them to you. UPDATE. Want to hear a weird conclusion to the problem? I tore open one of my broken ps2 for the cmos battery. It had leads so I snipped them off. Wouldn't you know it fixed the problem. Thanks again!!

try these tips: take the battery out and set it asside. GENTLY bend the prongs that contact the battery up to increase their tension. they don't need to be bent very much so don't go prying them striaght up or anything like that. just a gentle tug upwards should do it. take a clean cotton cloth and wipe the battery very well and do not touch it again with your bare fingers. re-install the battery using the cloth to keep from touching it. do a soft reset. if your battery door fits loosly you can slip a thin piece of cardboard inbetween it and the battery to hold it in place but it should not be thick enough to make it hard to close the door and latch. hope this helps.

I tried them all just as you said and still no fix. Those were great ideas, too. Thanks for trying. UPDATE. Want to hear a weird conclusion to the problem? Not sure. If I take the backup battery out or leave it in I get that same message. UPDATE. Want to hear a weird conclusion to the problem? I tore open one of my broken ps2 for the cmos battery. It had leads so I snipped them off. Wouldn't you know it fixed the problem. Thanks again!!

it almost sounds like you had a dead battery again. I have had some bad luck with buying some of these replacement batteries. sometimes they are almost bad when you buy them. glad you got it working.

Here's my experiances with the backup battery.

I haddn't used my X5 for several weeks and when I came back to it, both batteries were showing 0%.
I recharged the main unit but the bub still showed 0%. Putting a meter on the bub indicated 2.8V and
as the battery is 3V I assumed that it was still probably OK.

I cleaned the battery contacts and bent them a little to make better contacts. Still no joy.

I then stripped the unit and cleaned the connectors between the motherboard and the bub daughterboard
and bent then slightly to make a better contact.

When I rebuilt, the bub showed 80% then died to 0% again.

I then connected a variable DC power supply to the battery connections.
These are the results:-
anything below 2.8V - 0%
2.82V - 80%
3.0V - 100%

Getting a new battery and checking it's voltage before fitting, it read 3.2v
My X5 is now working perfectly again.

Conclusions:-
The bub meter is rubbish! It also seems to require a soft reset between changing voltage levels to indicate any change.

The contacts between the motherboard and bub daughterboard also might require some TLC.

I hope this is some help to others.

Eejit

Oh BTW forgot to mention that's I have ROM Version A05 and MS PocketPC V 4.20.1081 (build 13100)
if that means anything to anyone. (can I update the ROM/OS ?)
