ActiveSync and Battery Drain

Awhile back there was an extensive thread on the topic of dead Axim batteries (batteries draining overnight). I've had this happen on several occasions and I think I've isolated the problem, but not the root cause.

It appears that if you leave ActiveSync running on the Axim, it will continue to turn the device on for no reason (at least none that I can figure out). This in itself isn't a big deal, as the device will turn itself back off based on your power settings. However, this is where the problem comes in. Some application (or PocketPC itself) is de-selecting the "turn off device if not used for xx minutes". Thus when ActiveSnyc powers up the device it never turns itself back off until the battery reaches a low enough level to force the device into sleep mode.

This happens randomly. Does anyone have answers to these questions:

1.) Why does ActiveSync turn the device on?
2.) What could cause the Power settings to become disabled?

I'm tired of having to remember to shut that damn ActiveSync down everytime I put the Ax away at night.

One possibility: on the Ax: ActiveSync, Tools, Options, uncheck box “When not connected to my PC…” if it is checked.

"when not connected..." box is already unchecked. Thanks, for the suggestion though.

There are definitely programs that can keep the Axim 'on' TomTom Navigator is one of these (but you can change the timeout in TomTom)

My personal quest to solve this problem continues. I now know what is resetting my "turn off device" settings. It's the reset button! On occasion (not always) a soft reset will disable the shut off settings (i.e., uncheck the box). So, after reseting your device please remember to check to see if these settings were affected.

I'm also testing the Activesync settings to see if deselecting the "when connected, sync with PC every xx minutes" option will keep the Axim off unitl I turn it on or it's awoken by a notification or reminder.

My goal, to never find my Ax on life support in the morning due to a severly drained, or worse, a dead battery.
