spontaneous brain wipe on axim x5

Hello, I've got a problem I hope someone can help me with. This morning I turned on my axim and apparently all info has been spontaneously lost, except the files on the expansion cards. It didn't even know who I was or what time it was (or what year!). It started at the very beginning, with screen alignment and a tutorial, as if the unit had never been used.

This doesn't seem to be battery-related--both batteries are fine, and the unit was plugged in to the charger. And everything was fine last night.

No, I didn't have anything backed up :( ...I can spend the time to re-install everything and redo my settings, but should I? In other words, is this likely to be an ongoing problem now that it has happened once, like a bad hard drive?

thanks,
mapper

A hard reset is usually caused by power loss or by holding down the power button while doing a soft reset. Apparently, neither situation can explain what happened to you so it sounds like it was one of those software glitches that sometimes happens. Regardless of the cause, don't be afraid of future data loss. Go ahead and rebuild everything, but make sure you sync regularly and backup. Spb Backup and Sprite Backup are terrific utilities for this purpose.

Thanks for that fast and helpful response! I will feel better about investing the time to redo everything knowing it's probably not a hardware failure. And I appreciate the tip re backup utilities.

You can backup using ActiveSync for free! The important thing is that you do backup :approve:

Very true! There is also a built-in backup utility in your device called Data Backup as well. However, after a few failed restores using the free utilities, I don't mind paying a bit more for the 3rd party ones.

Hey guys

I have recently had the same thing happen to my Axim X5, but now I can't for the life of me get it to sync with my PC - it always comes up with 'USB Device Not Recognised'

I have tried all the stuff suggested in the troubleshooters etc but......

Any ideas or suggestions?????

The data backup application included with windows mobile works just fine for me, and it requires no extra software. I just remember to do a PIM backup every night after I say my prayers, and that way I always have a current backup on my CF card
