Is the A03 rom faulty??? Read this
I've been having some real troubles with my Axim since I flashed to A03. Any actions with either word or excel can now hang the machine for a long time and it seems to be random. Let me explain.. Sometimes when I launch Word the Axim stalls for a long time and I can't do anything but wait for it to load. Sometimes it launches instantly. Whenever I close Word, the spinning dial, that shows that the machine is saving the file to memory, spins on for ages and all Axim functions are disabled in the meantime. The same goes for Excel. I thougt it must be due to some of the software I had installed so I did a hard reset but that didn't change anything. This used to work fine on my original A00 Rom. Any suggestions? And keep in mind that I can't get 2003 for a while since they won't let us Icelanders upgrade yet, unless you can tell me where to order the upgrade for overseas shipping. Can I downgrade the rom to A02 somehow? Thx

Do you use any memory cards and, if so, does changing or removing them effect the startup time for these programs?
If so, I've mentioned this on a couple of threads and some people have claimed it cannot be having an effect but I'll put it out there again for your consideration. If your cards do not have a My Documents folder, PPC02 places a file 'ignore_my_docs' on the card which cause these programs to search through the entire contents of the memory card(s) for possible files. The solution is to create a My Documents and delete the ignore_my_docs file.
I hope this helps.
P.S. the last time I was on the Dell website, it looked like A02 has been taken off of the download site. I'm not sure you can go backwards, anyway. I've never heard of anyone trying it.

Is there anywhere to find a list of what the ROM updates are supposed to fix? I have not been having any problems with my Axim, so I am debating on updating or not.
Thanks
Cheers

Just search the threads here. It;s been posted a number of times. Ikehiker is correct about the My Documents glitch. Happened to me once when I switched in one of my CF cards from my digital camera.

I don't see why you couldn't go backwards if you want to. The "update" completely replaces the OS in ROM. Forwards - Backwards - it shouldn't make any difference. I believe the A02 upgrade was labeled A01, the file was R59756.EXE, dated 5/25/03. If you want this file, let me know. There shouldn't be any copywrite issue, since Dell made it freely available.
Having said this, I don't think this is an A03 issue.

That's the A03 upgrade. The A02 was labeled A00 (what is it with Dell???) and had a date in April, I believe.
The reason I said I wasn't sure it was possible is because they upgrades check to see what is currently present. I'm not sure A02 will recognize A03 as a valid Dell OS.

I just checked and A02 (aka A00) is back on the download site. It's actually dated 4/8/03.

I doubt that the ROM is the problem or we would have heard a lot more about such instances.

I think Ike's right (as he so often is)...I'm sure I remember hearing that somebody else tried to re-install an earlier version and found they couldn't...
