Mad System crash and restore disaster

I installed PockeTV last night without any problems and downloaded a movie from the site to test and it had a problem where it would loop back to the beginning after about 30 seconds. I tried shutting down the app, but it was locked up so I did a soft reset. After I reset, everything on my SD card was gone. I took the card out and put it back in and I got the message that it needed to be formated. I was not happy. I remembered I had done a full system backup through ActiveSync and a full backup on my Axim through the backup utility about 3 weeks ago. I had not stored much new info since then so I was not to concerned, plus my contacts and everything had been synced to my pc. So I decided to do the full system restore through ActiveSync. After an hour it finished. There was still nothing on my SD card and it synced wm contacts and updated my pc to match my Axim which means it deleted everything from the last 3 weeks. Now I was extremely upset. Not much I could do about that at this point so I copied my last backup file to my Axim and did a restore through the Axim. Still nothing on my SD card except for the backup file I had just put on it.

What is the purpose for the backup if it does not backup anything important. Why did ActiveSync think a 3 week old version was current and delete all new data off of my PC. There is something wrong with this. What steps can I take to prevent this in the future. I have now lost all my data that was on my SD card and I have to reinstall all apps that were on the card as well. Silly me to think a backup would actually backup my data.

rbertram, my heart goes out to you, as I have experienced exactly the same problems. Here is what I leanred:

1. DO NOT trust the built in backup utility. Even if the backup operation is successful, the restore, at least in my case, fails at 99%. How is that for the definition of evil on earth?

2. Activesync does not back up your storage cards. You should manually create copies of them on your PC.

3. Before commencing the restore operation, make sure that in Activesync options, under "rules", you choose that in cases of conflict always copy from your PC to the Mobile Device and not vice versa. That will help a little. If during the first sync you are prompted to decide whether to merge the two databases or choose one over the other, it is best to combine them and then eliminate the duplicates, either manually or through the "Outlook Duplicate Remover" (nice little freeware, do a search for it). At least you don't lose info.

Finally, nothing is lost. If Outlook decided to erase its entries because the date of the Axim's empty files is newer, all the data will simply be moved to the deleted items folder, from which you can easily enough move it back.

It's never fun, but at least you can avoid catastrophes.
