Mad HELP! Error accessing device through 'My Computer'

Ugh.

I have had my Axim for a few months now, and have never had any problems up till now. I have installed the rom update A03, but did not have any problems after installing the update, though.

i recently havent been able to sync my PPC to my laptop for about a week or so... the only thing NEW i've done is to get cable modem access... but I really dont see why that should have any effect. I am able to Syncronize the device, and do avantgo, etc, but any time i try to browse the contents of the device i get this error message:

"critical communication services have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and then connect again."

I have done a soft reset, I have done a hard reset... i have run system restore on my laptop... all to no avail.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP!?

Worried

im using the standard cradle... USB.

I think i figured out what the problem is... its my firewall. The thing is, ive been using the firewall for weeks and i've always been able to access the "mobile device" and use the "explore" option on the activesync.

I shut down my firewall, and lo and behold, it works. I dont know how i can allow this to keep working though... i already gave activesync free reign to go through the firewall if it needs to.

i'm using McAfee firewall, if it matters...

thanks for any help figuring this out.

The firewall setup may have been changed by the cable modem setup. ZoneAlarm will cause the same error, but you can stop it by temporarily shutting off the program control setting. In ZoneAlarm this monitors which programs are accessing the internet.
There should be a similar setting in McAfee.

I'm not sure why, but with a cable modem the PC seems to think that ActiveSync is accessing the internet when it goes to the Dell.

ActiveSync uses TCP/IP to communicate with the Axim. When the firewall sees that TCP/IP activity it assumes it's an attempt to access the Internet, and either blocks or reports it, depending on your settings. No communication over the Internet actually occurs.
