Try performing a soft reset and then try to format again. Sometimes soft resets can work wonders.

Thanks for the suggestion i tried this and still no joy :(
This all happened after i installed the UK maps on the card for tomtom and then i tried to open tomtom and it said that there was no application data and when i looked in the sd card there was a load of un named folders with no accessible data
i then had to put some mp3 music into the card before it would let me delete everything off the card.
after deleting the card and resetting the axim it said do you want to format so i tapped on no and tried to format the card with flash format the program would not even see the card so i reset and the did the do you want to format this card thing and tapped yes flash format would then see the card but wont format it!!
bl**dy sandisc

You may want to invest in a card reader. They can work wonders. :) You should be able to format it on the PC no problem. Plus you get MUCH better transfer rates... also the card reader won''t screw up your card...

You might also want to try Storage Tools. I couldn't format with my PC but this worked...very fast too.

Right guys here we go again i took the sandisk card to my mates house and he put it in his digital camera formatted it and took loads of pics with it and then put them onto his pc we did this about 5 times without fault i then put it back into my axim and tried to format it back to fat 32 as the camera formatted it to fat 16 and it would not format I kind of knew this would happen!!
I then put his Toshiba 16meg card in my axim and tried to format it and guess what it would not format that either still the same old error# 31 that says exclusive access to the storage card is denied and something about close any application that may be accessing files on the card well nothing is open or running again?
I am now beginning to think that i have a defective axim it is only a week old will dell swap it for a new one within a certain period of time??
i cant believe that 2 sd cards can be wrong or defective i know they work in my mates camera fine
Regards biggen

In North America they will swap it for a new one within 30 days. After 30 days they MAY give you a refurb. In the UK it could be different.

Hi guys
Spoke to a dude at DELL today and they are sending me a new AXIM from the factory i asked him about sending one with the new OS build 4.25.1131 build 14000 and he said that all the new ones are sent from the factory with this build now
he admitted that there was a fault with Sandisk SD cards and Sandisk would replace them I am still waiting to hear from sandisk
Only draw back to the exchange is they say it will take up to 2 weeks to get it out to me Now is this because they are waiting for the new update i ask myself ???
Or is it to bring you closer to the 30 day exchange/refund window??
any how lets see what happens
i have also ordered a simpletec 128 meg sd card from ebuyer today lets see how that goes
Regards biggen

It is great the Dell is sending you a new Axim. I have been using the Sandisk SD cards from the beginning and have had no problems. Best of luck
