Hmm soft reset to sync, but not all the time?

i've been using my Axim for about 5 months now. however, in the past month, i've had to soft reset almost every time i connect to my work laptop, and about 20% of the times i connect to my home desktop (both Dell).

if it was consistent, i would assume there was some setting that was keeping me from connecting to either machine. since it's not, i'm baffled as to why it's so random.

i've looked at all of my system settings, and i can't figure it out, so... anyone have any ideas?
