SD card troubles

I purchased a smart media SD card and have been having troubles with it. The first time put the SD card in my axim, it told me the SD card was completly full and I couldn't copy anything onto it. After a soft reset, everything was fine. Then a couple of days later, I tried opening one of the files I had saved on the card and it wouldn't open, so I check the folder via active sync, and all my files were gone and in their place, I had four folders and four random files with periods and commas as their names. I deleted these files and recopied the original folders and everything was good except the memory was still taken up as if the original files were still there?? But everything was working good then a couple of days later, the same thing happened. Is there something I am doing wrong?? I am still new to this and I don't know much about my axim. How do you format an SD card?? Could that have been the problem?? Somebody help please. Thanks,
Kevin

There are quite a few posts about SD card problems on the site, do a search and you should find the information you are looking for.

Also, you may want to get yourself a program to format the cards, there are two out there that are pretty decent:

Storage Tools

Flash Format

Hope this helps...
