We may never know what the real problem is/was. All I hope is that it is fixable by Software/Rom update and not a hardware replacement problem.

It is possible that the Axims that performs running at 472MHz is running at a faster memory speed than others. I know that this is a new wrinkle to this thread but it is important that everyone realizes that there could be more differences to the Axims that just the CPU.
Just a thought.

Yep! This thread is getting out of control, and needs to be broken into other threads...
I running an Axim Basic (300Mhz), PXA255, PocketPC 2002, Using XCPUScalar, at 472Mhz, no problemo. :D

I just wanted to jump back in and say to everyone that they have done a great job on this thread! It's been one of the better conversations I've ever read on Aximsite. :D

I had the same problem and it REALLY freaked me out. Thought my Axim was dead:rolling:. I did what JmE said and now it works perfectly (had the same effect as a hard reset).

The article talks about a software only problem...
The post I made, which you quoted, was regarding 597 MHZ CPU setting benching lower thn the 472 MHZ setting. It was hashed out months ago with PPC 2002 on other forums as being related to what the settings using 597 were underclocking or running less than par that was giving lower performance. It was not an Axim only result. It was figured in the numbers and what the settings were doing or something like that... But check out the threads on it because I really don't have any direct info about it.
Anyway, I was trying to answer another users post. I personally don't run that setting nor do I intend to.
Thanks,

Mine is using L=1 M=3 N=2
I used CPUID to check it
I have made no modifactions to my Axim 2003
CPU: PXA255/A0 or PXA26x/B!
CPU Current Frequency : 398 MHz
Turbo Mode Frequency : 398 MHZ
Run Mode Frequency : 398 MHz
PXbus Frequency : 199MHz
SDRAM Frequency : 99 MHz
MEM LCD Frequency : 99 MHZ
L=1 M=3 N=2
This is the slowest PDA I have ever owned.
Isn't Dell watching this board!!!!

Are you running in Maximum performance mode?

I am so confused
After this blizzard of posts I am lost. Would someone mind taking a peak at my settings (attached) and let me know if I can/should overclock and how to do it. Thanks

Everyone seems to have different L M & N numbers. Does anyone know what that represents?

There was a post earlier in this thread that the Maximum performance option on the Axim's with WM2003 show the results you listed.

This is from earlier in the thread as well:

Maximum Performance setting sets the pxbus to 199. Normal, PowerSave, or Auto uses a pxbus of 99. Going to Max or from to Normal, Save, or Auto sets the pxbus back to 99. Under Hack Master and Max Performance, using fetch gets the L/M/N settings of 27/4/1. When using Hack Master under Normal/Save/Auto, fetch gets the L/M/N settings of 27/2/2.
For real world performance gain on WM2003, Maximum Performance or using Hack Master to set L/M/N/ to 27/4/1 does yield noticeable improvement. When using File Explorer, the file listing for the Windows folder comes up faster. Loading roms in PockeSNES is MUCH faster than loading when using Normal. Haven't really tried anything else. The 199 bus does see a noticeable increase in performance in some areas using WM2003, but I don't think that is the problem with WM2003 because in some situations, my Axim still feels laggy even with the extra bus. 27,2, 2 yeilds 398 MHZ. The PXA250 Axim Advanced is capable of better than that with the right settings. I used to run them...

Folks, I am not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but I finally got tired of the whole AX 2003 problems and went out and bought a HP2215 last night. I really don't think Dell is going to fix this problem and have the speed of the AX to what we would expect. I have a feeling this is the same problem the Toshiba e740 has and that is why Toshiba is not releasing a 2003 update. Both machines are using old architecture. I may be wrong and hope for everyone I am, but I went from one dog (toshiba) to another and I have had it. Anyways here is a CPUID screen shot from the HP2215 for you guys to examine.
By the way the the HP2215 is the best PDA I have ever owned the thing is a screamer! I have a database (SprintDB) that took about 20 seconds to load with toshiba, about 40 seconds on the AX (2003 crap), and now it takes about 4 seconds on the 2215. Let me know if there is any more info you need on the 2215.

My picture didn't show up, how do you attach a picture? I did the attach file option and it is a .JPG file. Any help and I will get the 2215 CPUID pix up.
Thanks,
