Yes you can, it was a lot cheaper for me to just buy an SD card for the extra memory, and I even had money left to buy the WiFi card, and the screen protectors.

But then the 400 will OC to 472...
"The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board. Eleven, eleven, eleven."
"Oh, I see, and mostly, the amps go up to ten?"
"Exactly."
"Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?"
"Well, it's one louder, isn't it?"

I've been doing a little research and haven't found any reports of overclocking damaging the processor beyond use. Understandably, any damage to your Axim from continuously overclocking the processor voids your warranty, but has it ever come to that in anyone's experience?
Also, I'm wondering what the effects of the lifespan of the processor is...
Supposedly, with a regular PC processor, the percent increase is supposed to decrease the life of your processor by that amout, i.e a 200 Mhz overclocked to 300 Mhz would half the lifespan. I'm curious as to how much of a hit the xScale's would take on lifespan. Gauging the typical life of a PDA, I'm sure the processor would last longer than most of the other components, so this may be a moot question.
I wish I had the disposable income, I'd buy a few machines to test...

Im your man!!! I used TurboTray and at first it was running but I had 2 icons in the tray. So I soft reset and thats when it hit the fan. I got some error message saying the rom will be reset and I was like ok. I hit the ok button and nothing is happening so I soft reset again and thats it no more axim. Hard reset got me nothing. Called dell and told them my axim doesnt work they troubleshooted over the phone. The extent of the troubleshooting was this, "Did you reset the axim? Did you try a hard Reset? Did you try removing the batteries? Ok well we are sending you a new axim. DO NOT USE TurboTray though it is free you might just get the same thing I got a paperweight. By the way in a few weeks there will be a new firmware update or bios update or something like that. They said my new axim would ship in a few weeks because they are trying to work some software isssue. The tech mentioned something not working to its fullest potential so im stuck without a handheld for a few days.
Stats of my handheld: OS Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.1081 (Build 13100)
Processor Intel PXA255
memory 64 mb
Good luck with OC

Well, the above case is an exception -obviously- since a lot of guys have o/c their Axims (including me ;)). I am a serious supporter for overclocking, because I ALWAYS try to improve the machines/devices/gadgets that I own (from cars to watches :D)
Overclocking should obviously be exercised with caution, but its not THAT dangerous. Provided everyone takes some precaution steps, o/c could be fun and with great results.
Oh, and o/c a CPU by 50%, does not mean that its lifespan will be decreased by 50%. Who said that ? Do you have any proof or theories to back this up ? If you are saying that the MTBF will be reduced, or that the error frequency will be increased, then yes you have a point.....

Speaking of overclocking...
The Axim Basic and Axim Advanced both use the PXA255 processor. From my own research, the PXA255 in the Axim Basic is being instructed to run at 300 Mhz, while the PXA255 in the Axim Advanced is being instructed to run at 400. I have successfully used overclocking utilities to run the basic at 400 (and beyond)
Further reasearch shows me that the ROM image for the A03 update is the same size for both the Basic and the Axim. The same holds true for the A05 update.
I wonder.... what would happen if I tried manually loading the A03 ROM image for the Advanced onto my AO3 running Basic....

I tried using XCPuscalar a while ago to o'clock Axim X5 Advanced PPC 2003 A04 rom, to 472Mhz. Result: just locked the unit up. So i got rid of the program. May give it another go now that i have A05 working. Someone mentione that if the meory was 10ns you may have troubles o'c'ing, anyone know of an app that can give you memory speed info?

Boz,
Two comments....
XCPUScalar has a new version out that supports the Axim properly. You may get better results from when you tried it before.
Pocket Hackmaster is more flexible in what it will allow you to set, but it requires a little more knowledge about what you are doing.

edit: tried XCPUScalar again. No Go. Locked up again, this time ive lost all my icons from the Today screen as well. Now i gotta work out how to get them back on screen, dont seem to want to re-appear by simply selecting under Settings > Today > Items ?

Does ANYONE here pays any attention to the warnings of the other members ?
I have said a couple of times that IF YOUR AXIM LOCKS UP, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HALVED THE RAM CLK!!!!!! That can be accomplished only through PHM. Oh, and if the Axim locks up even at 99MHz for Bus and RAM when o/c the CPU, it means that you have just gotten a crappy CPU (250 or 255). Do NOT continue to try to o/c your Axim, or you might end up locking it up for good.....

Ah, come on... you should know better than that. Anyone with the brass to overclock isn't going to listen to someone else's warnings...

Although I can be considered hot-headed and stubborn (and I AM considered those ;) ), if I'm going to do/try something that may damage my device/gadget, I ALWAYS see if I can find out in advance the problems I may be forced to face.......its only good sense
