Don't know how well the screen on the Axim is sealed, but I know some iPaq's had a problem where moisture or dust particles could get in around the screen edges.

No, I don't have a screen protector... I'm thinking about sitting it on its side and see if it will drain, maybe?

DO NOT PUT IT IN THE OVEN. Maybe try putting a towel over a table lamp shade and set the Axim to rest there for a few hours (with the light on of course). The heat rising from the lamp should be enough. Please look for a lamp with a lower wattage bulb in it too. 40-60 watts. I would do this and evaluate the results every hour or so.
If not I would plea stupid and just send it back....don't work, dunno why, pass a corn dog!
Good Luck!

How could liquid get "under" the screen anyway? I thought the screen assembly was sealed around the edges. Do you think you'll never get a few drops of rain on it?
|
I had a Jornado for several years that never saw a drop of rain. My Axim won't either. I don't go in for screen protectors. I don't need a steal case. I clean my screen with a hanky (using a clean corner). But you better believe it never gets wet. If you had any idea about what goes into an LCD -- especially a touch sensitive LCD, you wouldn't let yours get wet either.

Isn't there a liquid between the membrane and the screen? I've been looking for some tech articles on how these screens are made, but havn't found anything yet. Anyone care to donate a dead unit for research?

I spray a small amount of windex on a napkin and then I wipe the screen protector with that. Works fine for adhesion screen protectors for me. :D

It's been a week now. Is the moisture gone? Have you tried to turn it on? Give us an update!

The basis of the PDA screen is a piece of glass with a Mylar coating on it. The glass plate has a metallic coating that faces a metallic coating on the underside of the Mylar.
Pressing the screen brings the two layers of either type of screen into contact and an electrical current flows through them. The shorter the path to the edge of the screen from the place the stylus touches, the more current flows through the layers. By measuring the electrical current from the two sides of the display, the operating system determines the vertical and horizontal position of the stylus. By sampling the locations 100 times a second, the display can detect the movement.
Sounds like you may have melted the Mylar coating from your Axim. :o

Just call Dell and tell them the screen doesnt respond to taps anymore. I could just be a coincidence that your digitizer went out after you windex-ed the screen and you thought you killed it. Dont tell them what you did and dont post on Dell | Talk about it. They ussually dont ask too many questions about exchanges but it's better to watch your back.
Dell doesn't really care about ONE unit. Afterall, they're the deeper pocket...don't be afraid to call for a replacement.

Whoah!! I forgot that I posted this! Yeah, I got a replacement after about a week of trying to get it dried out, which I think did, but the screen would not respond, I decided to call.

A word of caution, opening up your Axim will most likley void any warranty that might be present to cover repairs from Dell... I'd just send it back to them and have them take a look at it.

The Axim's warranty covers it if it breaks, but not if you break it, and there's no repair option currently...

Sorry to say this, but it really bugs me when people think it's ok to lie about not having done something to a piece of equipment, just to get it replaced under warranty. Regardless of who the manufacturer is, or what your past experiences have been, it royally ticks me off having someone lie, and quite frankly, it's committing an act of fraud. As soon as that system is brought back to Dell, they will examine it, and they'll know it was damaged by misuse/mishandling.
RTM, call Tech support and ASK them what's the best way of cleaning the screen, so that you don't run the risk of damaging it. You do something accidental, or stupid to damage the unit, sorry you pay for it to get it replaced...that's called facing responsibility.

I agree with accepting responsibility but I also agree with not posting anything on these boards with regards to overclocking and using your PPC outside of dell's scope. I'm part of a Mitsubishi club and a guy's tranny went out. When he went to get it serviced through warrany, I guess they saw the sticker on his car advertising the site. He said they called him back a couple days later informing that his warranty was voided. He asked why and they told him they had seen some posts on an online forum referring to him drag racing his car. I work at an insurance company and we have people that investigate when claims are filed to see if there was misuse, etc.
Remember, Dell doesnt care about your charity and being honest. They'll stick it to you when they can. They did with my laptop screen....they replaced a perfect screen with one with 4 dead pixels. The video card is what went bad, but they said they replaced both to make sure it was fixed. I get it back and the first thing I notice is 4 dead pixels. I called them and they wouldnt take it back to fit another screen. I went all the way up to the manager and nothing was done. What I should have done was sent it back via the 30 day guarantee. Instead, they kept it for 2 weeks and sent it back a few days after my 30 day satisfaction guarantee was all used up. At that point they wouldnt let me send it back since it was past 30 days from the ship date.
A corporation is an inefficiant machine that tries to cater to PEOPLE but not the PERSON.
Just my take on it.
Rob

Water spilled on Axim
I have had a similar problem. Spilled water on screen/button area and now the unit won't work. I get the Dell logo and a message to hard reset, both of which fade from the screen rather quickly.
Hard resets didn't help, neither did taking the back off and using a low temp hair dryer plus airing at room temp.
I think this is a design flaw for a $300 PDA to be so sensitive to moisture, but of course Dell disagrees. I especially think Dell is remiss in not offering any repair options, and they didn't tell me I could get a replacement policy for $20 when I bought the unit.
P.S. disassembly is easy: remove all exterior rubber pieces (two pads and two tiny inserts on the back, and the long rubber pads along each side. Using a very small screwdriver, remove six screws (four under the rubber pads and two exposed when the battery module is removed). At this point, gently separate the case along the joint.
Good luck!
