It really has nothing to do with "seeing what is on TV". It has to do with controlling your home theater equipment at the touch of a single-button (or sometimes a couple buttons). For someone that simply has a TV and DVD player....then maybe it isn't worth it. But for those of us who have invested a lot of money in high end home theaters.....it is definately worth it. For example, at the touch of a single button, my Axim (or a Pronto) can automatically turn on my TV, turn on my receiver, change inputs on the receiver, change inputs on the TV, power on the DVD player, and start the movie....and once I make my next home theater purchase it will even be able to dim my lights in this sequence as well. All of this is accomplished by pressing one single button. Tell me a regular old remote that can do this?

It's not a big deal to me to do all of this manually.....but it makes it much easier on my girlfriend, who never can figure out all my equipment.

deftech,

I see your point. They do have some remotes that do macros, but nothing like that. Sounds like Pronto really does have a lot of functionality.

Is that thing turbo charged?

Seriously, this may be something that I will look into when I get my projection systems, but right now its not for me.

Thanks for the info though.

Deftech - Extremely well said, BRAVO! My girlfrined is also "equipment challenged" so this has made her life much easier. I have the light dimmers and even the A/C controls from smarthome.com and will be adding those features to my Axim as soon as I get my IR extender. I have a good feeling this week will be the week.

Pronto TSU6000 - best price $700... All you get is a remote.
iPronto - More than $1,200 a glorified remote that extends into the tablet pc arena.

My Axim X5 Advanced - 225 (ebay with 128 meg sd card)
pda-IR - 30
Software 14

I just saved over $300 and got a PDA, a system capable of GPS, a home automation controler, a tv controler, and a new best friend.

My old remote had over 50 buttons on it. My wife couldn't make heads nor tales of the thing. My Axim now has three buttons, one says tv, one says dvd, and the other (I don't know why) says VCR. After inserting the movie of her choice, she needs only hit DVD or VCR and the remote does all the rest.

It comes down to cost savings. I was about to buy a pronto when I came accross www.remotecentral.com. That's where I found pdaWin. I cancelled my pronto order and found my Ax on Ebay... Life is goood.

Deftech,

If you are looking for dimmers and the like, check out this guy on Ebay:

placefordeals

He has an online store dedicated to home automation. His prices on Switchlinc (my favorite) are hard to beat. He only charges 50% shipping on multiple items too.

I've been using them and they work fabulously. Not to mention they look good too!

I think we have all come to terms that our Axims and the small price we paid for our remote software was well worth it.

As the orriginator of this thread I thought it would be fitting to let everyone know I received my Ir extender today! Thanks to all of you for your support during the waiting period. Now, can anyone tell me what I have to do to make it work? I put the device in, went to the IR setup icon, held it near the TV and pressed the connect button but nothing happened. What am I doing wrong?

Got mine today too.
Popped it in.
Opened TV Remote Contol app.
Went to Options | Output and clicked on External IR CF transmitter.

Works great.

Yep, as handle said, just pop the PDA-ir in.....then just open up the PDAwin software and go to Options > Output > External IR CF transmitter.....make sure it stays checked. There's no other setup or anything you have to do.

I figured it out also, I can't believe that something that cost so little works so great!

Coming out of sleep mode I sometimes get this pop-up message:

Caution
A CF card error has been
Detected. The system has
entered sleep mode to
prevent hardware damage.

I click on OK and everything is still functioning.
I can live with it.
PDA-ir Version 2.0

I check out this link, I am not the only one with this issue.

Alright... Stop it already... I still don't have mine... It shipped, but still has not arrived. They are probably walking it accross country now!

Seriously though, I'm glad everyone is happy with the performance.
