I have encountered the same problem, (I use the "PQI" brand sd card). I have a card reader, my pc's os is windows98, connected the card reader with the pc, you can find a new disk, selected it, then, click the right button of the mouse, the select the menu"properties",then, select the "tools", the first program, "check error? or scandisk"(sorry, i don't know the english version's translation)
procession is over, you can find the lost directory and files in sd card, but, the directory's name maybe become "dir0000xx" and so on, you can rename it, most of files can rescued.
hehe, I have encountered such problem many times. maybe dell's pda has the compatible problem with sd card.
