Exclamation SD programs dissapearing

Hi-

I'm running WM 2003 and I just bought a 256mb Smart SD card. I put it in and it seemed fine and I went ahead and installed a bunch of stuff on it. Now I turn it on and I see 80% of my programs have dissapeared! I tried taking it out and putting it back in but now there is NOTHING showing up by it says it is all the way full. How can this be? Can anyone tell me what to do? I have tried softresets and viewing from the desktop but it won't show up as anything. Thanks!

sounds like a corrupt FAT. If the card is new I'd replace it, just in case it's hardware related. If you've had it for a while then you need to reformat the card. PPC cannot do this "out of the box" so if you have a card reader or a digital camera etc. you can do it. If not then you need to get something like this:

Storage Tools

It is brand new but I'd like not to replace it if I don't have to. I tried all the reformat tools but they all either cancel right away (like Storage tools) or tell me it does not have exclusive rights to the card and to close other programs. I have tried to do this and did soft resets but nothing seems to work. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Axim and SD cards...

At this adress (http://freespace.virgin.net/jon.crawford/index.htm) , you can find a description of the problems plaguing Axim with many SD cards, as well as a test aimed at showing if your particular card is subject to the problem. Dell is supposed to soon have a patch ready from what I've heard, and Sandisk (if it's your brand) has a new variety of card which works.

Do you know if "Smart" brand is a Sandisk type of card or not?

Thanks for your help!

Many of the cards are OEMd. Some Lexar card actually come from Scamdisk I believe. I think the one I have comes from Panasonic.

I would replace the card if the storage tools are not working. IMHO that's a bad sign. Or maybe you are using them incorrectly, no offense intended, just that you didn't give details.

I went through 3 Scamdisk cards and they all failed. I did a serious amount of heavy testing on the Lexar and no problems at all.

No offense taken - I might not be using it right I guess too. I just put it in with the little triangle pointing down (so the lable is facing me) and then try to put files on it. The one thing I cannot get is how to write protect it. I don't see any switch at all or anything on the card. Maybe you or someone could help me with this. I think I might just return it though. Thanks!

Worried

Well, I have a Sandisk 256mb card, bought it before the Axim arrived thinking I was buying the best!

After experiencing the same problems as everyone else on here my experience is that they're ok, PROVIDING that you don't use large files, or, you transfer medium (3 or 4 mb) files one at a time. Mp3s for example, for me, if I transfer them manually one by one, no problem... and they work fine too. Try and slap a folder full of them and it's all over!

There should be a little switch on the side of the SD card. I think it actually can vary by vendor, but it should be there. Count the pins on the back, are there 7 or 10?

There are 7 big gold boxes on the back and 1 big gold box down below the cut corner and like half a box on the other side. so overall there are 9 boxes but one of them is a half and one is below the others. What does that mean?

9, not 10. You're right. That means that it's SD not MMC. And there is no tiny little switch on the side of the card that says LOCK or anything?

SD stands for "Secure Digital". One of the things that differenciates SD from MMC, apart from depth, is the "Lock" switch on the side, an some stuff built into the card for future use of copy-protected music. You must have MMC if there is no switch. I have never encountered SD without the switch.
