SD Transfering File Trouble

I read through a bunch of forums and could not find an answer to this, so I am gonna throw this out to you. I have a 128 mg SD and it is close to full, so I have made a back-up of the folders and files onto my hard drive with explorer and I know the back ups have worked before. I bought a 256 mg and started downloading the folders and such to it , and after a while I will notice that some of them dissappear. I reboot the Axim and sure enought they are not there. I copy them back on and now some new ones are gone. I am not for sure what SD I have other than Wal-marts name is on the package (YELLOW packaging) I am gonna take this back and get a Panasonic, costs more, but I am gonna try this. Do you have any ideas what I may do , cause I have a 512 mb for the CF coming to do the same thing. Any ideas what I may be doing to cause this or what. Thanks

Bet its a sandisk. Try a simpletech when you buy a new one. They work great.

I heard that once you corrupt the fat no reformatt will work unless you send it back. they have the equipment that will reformatt the secure area of the sd card. Now I read this from a reliable source but havent had any experience myself. All I know is i tried like hell to reformatt my sandisk 256 sd card and it would never reformatt properly, and almost always had problems instantly. My simpletech is very reliable though.

The 256 mb is a Lexar and come to think of it, I carried a couple of those back of the 128 mb's The one I am using with no trouble is a Fugifilm one and the Panasonic's I have are pretty good. Have any of you experinced good or bad with Lexar?

I have a question also, how can you corrupt the Fat on these disks. I mean when I get these disks they are all 16 fat, In my mind who would want a 16 if there is a 32. I format them all to 32 and they have all been fine, excpet this one and maybe all the Lexars' Do you think that some are better run on 16 instead of 32 ?
mmmmmmmmmm????

Its all down to the Axim thinking certain SD cards are MMC cards... MMC cards have a simpler FAT table than SD cards, and the Axim writes to the card not knowing its nuking the SD card in the process. Dell knew this happened back in January '03...

As for FAT32, every brand's technical support yet has suggested NOT to format the card as FAT32. They all state that the card should be left as supplied...

Mind you, I don't really think it would mess up the card if the Axim would correctly work with SD cards...

right now whether or not an SD card is good in the Axim (as in fully reliable, unkillable) depends on where it was made.

SD made in Japan is good.
SD made anywhere else might be bad.

SimpleTech gets all of its SD from Japan, as does Panasonic and Memorex.
Lexar gets some of its SD from Japan.

Sandisk and some others get none of their SD cards from Japan.

FAT32 is slower for most uses than FAT16. FAT32 seems to be more stable than FAT16 on Taiwan and China SD cards.

SimpleTech says not to format its SD cards, and I wouldn't format any card unless I knew it had a substantial chance of crapping out on me.

EDIT: happycheesecake is right

Hey people, just to let you know, I carried the Lexar back to Walmart and after feeling like they thought I stole it and was bringing it back, I bought the Panasonic and have put all those programs on the 256 and more and its doing great. It was default 32 bit so I just formatted it to be like the others. I also noticed that I have a 128 Lexar and it does great. So I guess it is just like anything you get a bad one or 2 every once in a while. thnaks for all your replys.
