low memory

I continue to get a message that "memory is low", which I suspect is due to various applications that I have loaded. However, I don't think I have an atypical number of programs.

Is there a way I can run a program from the compact flash card? Can I run an application from the "built in storage," but have the data file for the app located on the compact flash card?

What other strategies can I employ so I can continue to use the applications that I find valuable, but yet preserve valuable memory for applications that are running.

I appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Bruce.

Yep, run them from CF or SD. When you install them from Activesync there is a dialog box that asks if you want to install to the default location. Choose NO and it will let you install it to Built In Storage (ROM), CF or SD.

btw, it's not a bad idea to keep as little in built in memory as you can and shell out for a SD or CF card..

I have almost all of my games/applications/e-books-themes on my Memory cards. The only applications I have on my main memory are programs that are constantly in use like Battery Pack, Pocket Backup Plus, and Pocket facelift. I wouldn't recommend installing to the built in memory, though.

I've heard that your built in mem is the slowest mem you have. Is that correct?

Yes (except for the ol' grey matter, that is.)

Running everything off my 256mb sd card. How do you keep the memory allocation slider from defaulting back to center?

Can't. M$ decided that the "optimum" point was to divide the remaining free memory between Storage and Program memory until something came along to demand one or the other. It's built in and unchangeable.

But you can keep it there short term, just that the OS can overrule. It typically wants you to have at least 2MB on either side.. So if you have 64MB RAM, 4.5MB in use for storage you cannot moves the slider all the way over until you have no storage free. It will want at least 2-3MB. It will let you leave it like that until it deems a change is needed. Or a soft reset (from memory).

Question I'm not sure...

if the built in memory is the slowest or not. BUT I do know that if you load applications there and then start a program it is then in memory and the slowness of that built in storage does NOT come into play unless that application has to constantly access that disk during use.

So I have quite a few programs there (built in storage) and they are not slow because of where they are stored!

The memory is the memory wherever the program is loaded from. I would think a large (for pocket PC) game would better reside on CF or SD but most applications for PPC are quite small and all the program is in regular memory during use.

Apps stored in Built-in run just fine, it's just that it takes a little longer to load them into program memory to run. That slight delay makes them a little bit slower to start.

I have a question, there was a site on here from PocketPCTechs and I went there and they no longer offer the Dell Axim upgrade at this time, making the 64 to a 128. I have LOTS of programs, some I use all the time , some I use here and there and some are small and I just have them in case. I have nearly all them loaded on the CF and SD cards. There is very little used in the main memory. I have gone to the memory on the system, deleted temp, history , u name it. I have moved some files to a folder on the SD card and if I need them I can get to it. Anyway, when I go to look at the memory, all together I have about 12 mgbs left out of the 64 if I figure that right. What more can I do to gain some of that memory without deleting any programs. Like I said most are on the cars and all that might be on the Dell Ram would be shortcuts or registry links and I have checked and they are not taking up much. Can you help me until PocketPCTechs gets the upgrade back. Thanks
