Question USB port power surge on ActiveSync via cable?

I've only had my Ax a few days and have been syncing through the cradle attached to the USB port on my Dell Latitude with no problems. I later plugged the cradle into the Latitude's docking station USB port and still had no problems.

I bought an aftermarket "sync" cable to use, so that I could sync with the laptop and leave the cradle attached to the docking station.

When I plug the sync cable into the USB, I get a popup error screen about "USB power surge detected" on the port and a dialog box to reset the port. When I try to reset it doesn't work and tells you to reboot.

I've tried all combinations to make this work, with the Ax off when the laptop comes on, etc. etc. etc. Same thing. I see the Ax trying to establish communications right before this happens.

Anyone else experiencing this using sync cable instead of the cradle?? :rolling:

Question

Got a new cable, same thing. I am connecting to the USB port on a Dell Latitude C400.

One time I did get the error but the Ax connected and did sync, so I am not sure what it is about, maybe the Ax is attempting to charge from the USB on the Latitude and there is not enough juice there, although it happens whether the laptop is on battery or AC.

Need help, want to take it all on the road soon and not have to take the cradle!!

hrm that is really odd, I'd have bet a fair sum of money that a new cable would fix it, but I guess for whatever reason, the laptop doesnt like it :(

I'm thinking that maybe the Ax is trying to charge as well as sync from the USB port and it does not have enough power to do that so it is shutting it down.

The sync works fine with the cradle attached to the same USB port, but of course that has the power supply with it to perform the charging function.

I'm pursuing it from the tech support side on the Latitude, I may also install ActiveSync on another Dell laptop I have as well as my desktop and see what happens.

I have an X5 connected to my Dimension 8100 desktop and was having trouble with active sync;therefore, the Dell tech guys suggested a power USB hub. I purchased a Belkin 4 USB hub powered attached my X5 to the power hub and power surged out my mother board and the X5. Belkin says their USB hub can not generate a power surge. Dell does not know what to make of the power surge. Dell replaced my X5 with a new one and I replaced my mother board, but now how do I active sync and transfer files. I will surely not try the powered hub again. Any thoughts?

i had the same issue, i purchased after market power ,sync cable from ebay, when i sync with my home laptop and desktop it works fine.
When i sync with my office latop D600 there is a power surge, Axim is triying to sync and charge battery of axim at same time, there is no enough power in the usb port of my docking station, if i connect to my laptop(D600) directly it woks fine. the Solution is to get self powered usb hub.
