Question Screen Tap Problem - Any Fix?

My Axim x5 400 stopped responding to screen taps on Saturday. Intermitent at first, then couldn't get any response at all , except at the very top right of the screen. Tapping there opens the input method selection box at the bottom right, and sometimes the keyboard itself. But, of course, tapping the keyboard does nothing.

After soft resets didn't help I backed up and performed a hard reset. Then I couldn't get past the 'Align Screen' page! Tap it all around to align and it just jumps back to the start point. I called Dell Tech--very disappointing. Especially since they used to be excellent.

I eventually found several posts about this on the Dell forums. The screen tapping works if you squeeze the sides of the Axim, apparently because the frame flexes over time and allows the screen to separate slightly from the foil beneath it. I didn't realize it was so common. So why does tech support act like you're crazy when you call about this?

I called tech support and spoke with a man who spoke very little English, and that with a heavy accent. After repeating my service tag to him at least six times, he had me hard reset again, with same results. He had me re-align the screen 40 times (I'm not exaggerating - I counted) with same result. He also tried to have me bypass the alignment screen, but I'm not certain I did it correctly as I just could not understand him. He finally said he would have a new (read: refurbished) Axim sent to me, however he kept screwing up my shipping address, so I told him not to send anything and I would call back to try to get a tech who speaks English a little better. But every time I called I kept getting him again! I finally called the next day and got a woman who spoke English a little better. Replacement is on the way.

But....if this is a recurring problem, what's to stop the replacement from doing the same? I never dropped it or anything. I use a Belkin leather flip case with a swivel belt clip.

Would a hard case, like Rhino, help prevent this?

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Or do I just keep getting replacements when it occurs until my service plan expires?

All advice welcome!!

Thank you,

Jim McGowan

A screen protector won't fix this problem. I had this problem for awhile myself. If you squeeze the screen, you should get response again. After a couple of weeks of having to squeeze the screen, my axim now responds normally. If you have something in your CF slot, I'd suggest taking it out for awhile. If this doesn't fix it, consider contacting dell.

Nope. I read about that on the Dell forum also, but I've ever used one. I have used a wet/dry screen cleaner, but no protector.

Dont read to much into the question. I never mentioned that a screen protector would fix this problem. I only mention it because sometimes my screen protector causes this type of problem....

Sometimes screen protectors slip under the frame of the display and put pressure on the touch screen. The system sees that pressure as a tap,and it waits for the tap to go away. It doesn't, of course, so you can't do anything else. That's why whenever the screen goes inoperative the first question is, "Are you using a screen protector?"

Call Dell, ask for a replacement. The screen should not need squeezing to work. Something is going/has gone wrong with it.

I have inexpensive screen protectors I got off eBay...they're not extremely clear, but they do protect the screen and they're worth the $6 I paid for them. Anywho, ocassionaly mine get folded up at the top of the screen and put pressure on the screen keeping me from tapping...I got worried the first time it happened until I looked closer at the screen and saw where it was depressed at the top....just my 2cents...this kind of stuff does happen...hence the, "are you using a SP comment..."

Check out the Dell Community Forums at Dell Support.

Screen protectors that get tucked in at the edges of the screen can cause this issue.

Also, squeezing the Axim to make it work is not a solution. And it won't go away on its own. Once the screen stops responding to stylus taps, even if it's intermittent, that means the screen is slightly separated from the foil beneath it. It won't get better on its own. (Unless, of course, it was temporarily caused by a screen protector.)

My replacement is already on the way. I already know what the problem is.

I just want to know if anyone has managed to prevent this problem from re-occuring.

I think I'll just try the DS hard case and hope for the best!

wondering if by not using a screen protecter......maybe your cleaning the screen to often and pushing down on it...also maybe at the same time it's possible that your pushing particles of dust and lint up under the frame and your screen is seeing this as added pressure as a continious tap...maybe

I have fixed the problem but the resolution is you have to take the axim apart. It is very easy to do and what happens there are 6 little connectors one each side and 2 in the middle those little metal taps have to be pointing up in order to make contact with the screen if the little taps are bent just a slight couple centimeters it will not be contacting correctly which in theory it make the screen think that when your clicking at the top it is connecting at the bottom if you press the case on the right or left corner depending on which on is not responding it will start responding. So the soultion is you take it apart which no lie it takes 10 minutes at the most just be very careful theres not a lot of small parts main thing you have to worry about is static electrcity if your the worried about it go to radio shack and pick up an esd braclet for 10.00 to ground you from static electrcity thats it later if you need to fix it check out www.gethightech.com

Of course, your warranty will then be void. If it doesn't work you will not be able to get a refurbished replacement.
