Wow, this is really interesting. I have never dropped my axim, and I usually keep it in a nice case. We have a lot of case reviews at http://www.pyrogamer.com
Mine was in a plastic shopping bag (i.e. naked) on a hook on the wall with my plastic inhaler in the bag. I was lifting the bag off the hook when it slipped and fell 4 feet to a hardwood bench below. the axim fell screen-down.
i freaked out and checked it. the first thing that crossed my mind before picking it up was "i paid $286 to rent an Axim X5 Advanced for six months." luckily it didnt land on the inhaler inside the bag, and the bench was flat so the screen wasn't damaged. the axim worked fine, no scratches. however, my SD card popped out, and that definitely freaked me out, and i was worried it would need reformatting and be irrevocably damaged, along with the SD slot.
Nothing was damaged, however, and it was as if the drop had never happened.
I did drop my Axim a second time (different axim, actually; i sold my pxa250 and bought a pxa255 with WM2003)--that time it was in a Sena case and probably only fell 3-5 feet, so I wasn't worried, but the SD card popped out again and that got my attention. again, nothing damaged.
Only dropped mine once since I've had it and I was lucky. It dropped from the top of my car but it was in its Rhinoskin Aluminum which was inside the Grindergear Basecamp. Needless to say, 0 damage. I think I could have dropped from a plane in that setup without anything happening to it. :D

I've dropped my Ax 5-6 times already, all on concrete floors (mostly from waist height and once from shoulder height)..
It's taken a lot of abuse, but still only a tiny scratch is visible (if you look really really closely).
Oh.. And it's not in a case, the only protection is the dell standard screen protector...
(well.. Maibe there is a factor called "luck" involved too")
Someone once said the X5 was a brick, I must disagree, the brick would have shattered by now. ;)

Ive killed two PDAs by dropping them, and after that you learn to stop dropping them. I haven't ever dropped my previous two. On the other hand my clie did get stuck in one of those lazy boy chairs and practically snapped in half. If you have one at home put you hand between the seat and the backrest and see what I mean, some major leverage there especially when you recline with all your weight

I got off work and was running late. The axim was in my lap when I jumped out of the truck. Axim went about 10 yards through the air and landed on cement. I had it in the case that comes with it.....needless to say, I just purchased the Rhionskin Titanium :)
just a second ago, listening to the new OutKast on PocketMusic with headphones... well i moved a bit too far from my desk, came down on my knee, then on the carpet and bouced of twice I would say(came down in the corner) ... it crashed(SD card came out... WTF?) but after turning it off/on it kept going, not a scratch and even kept playing the same song it was playing!! :)
Scenario:
Just got my X5 about 2 months ago - ISD Purchased it.
About 3 weeks ago, it happened....
I was at the Admin office and on my way out to my TRUCK to leave to goto the Post Office, I got stopped in the street to chat at a fellow administrator. I PLACED my A5 on top of my Toolbox on top of some other Papers, becaue I was carrying it (My Belt Clip was broke, ANOTHER STORY...).
Finished talking to fellow admin.
JUMPED into my Truck, started down the road.
Made a LEFT Turn, when DOWN a HILL, made a RIGH TURN.
Made it to the Post Office.
HMMMMMMMMMMMM..... Where is my Mail. OMG!
WHERE IS MY X5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! %^#%$^&(&*&^$ and some other words...
Slam into truck, speed off - retracing path...
Fly down road I came down, RAN STOP SIGN to get back to starting point of where I left it on my Tool Box..
Shiny glare catches my eye, along with papers all over the place in the MIDDLE of MY LANE going back on my Step Re-tracing..
OMG!! I had to have run over it... UGH!!!!!!!!!
It was in my Lane coming back, I HAD to have run over it...
Made a U-Turn VERY tight street, WHO CARES, Right??
(The Onwer of the house whose Yard became a Turn-Around Lane, might have, LOL)
(maybe should go tell him Sorry.. Had a very bad problem to deal with).
Anyway... (Must have Fallen/Flew 6-10 Feet!!!!!!)
Stop on the other side, as if I was on my way back to the Post Office, at the INTERSECTION of 2 streets, BUSY, too.
Run over to my POOR X5.. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am about to loose my cookies.. Got to have my X5...
Trembling...
Take it out of my Case - From Case Techworks...
Inspect outer damage.. ARGH!!!
The case has SPLIT at the Point Of IMPACT..
Lower RIGHT CORNER of Unit...
UGH!! No way it will work...
Turn On...
WHOA.. NO WAY! Can't be...
TADA!!! The DANG THING WORKS!
Not a SINGLE problem with this X5. Works like I took it out of the box, except for a few Dents/Cracks/Scrapes...
NOW, I for One, have to tell you this...
ALL YOU people out there who FREAK over dropping your PDA, this DELL Axim X5 ROX BIG TIME. Takes that saying to NEW LEVELS.. "Takes a Licking..Keeps on Ticking..." That has NOTHING on this bad boy....
My Dell Axim X5 is doing Just fine. All I have to do now, is take some CLEAR Fingernail Polish/Gloss, whatever of my Wife's and paint it on the Areas to keep it Sealed and keep the Finish from Flaking off more than it did...
NOTHING WRONG PERIOD with it..
So, for all you out there, Trust Dell. Give them a Break, and Let them do their thing, and BE patient.. They make awesome Products...
You know I cant help but think, do any of you purchase the complete care warranty??? Because if you did, and did nightly backups, you wouldnt worry about the X5 being damaged..it gets destroyed, Dell sends a new one! I love Dell.....
My friends call me the PDA Ace (irritates the heck out of me). My name has meant death to four of the IBM brand Palm IIIs (WorkPads). Once I was running across the street with one in my jacket pocket...and it beat me to the other side. This is not the fall that killed it
I decided maybe it was time to stop destroying the pdas issued to me by my job, so I got a Palm III through eBay (now that delightful Weird Al song is running through my head). It's been dropped a few times, too, so much that I have to torque it to get the touchscreen to work right, and the backlight is in a coma (although probably not dead; opening it up and tinkering around once got it functioning again).
My determination not to help Bill Gates kill PalmOS wavered last year (I had an insatiable desire for storage space and color, inexpensively, which was asking too much of Palm), and I bought a BE-300 from Dell in mid-October. In less than two-weeks' time, it and its cradle had fallen off my desk in my "computer room." When the cradle ran out of USB cord, about 18" from the floor, the BE fell the rest of the way. I thought it'd be no big deal; I'd put Palms through worse, and it had fallen perfectly flat, unlike the first time I dropped it, but I thought wrong. Casio hadn't shipped the BE back before I completely lost what little mind I had left and ordered an Axim (I cannot afford these things, because I am constantly spending money on my computers).
Since then (then being December), I have lost count of how many times I have dropped my baby. Let's see...there was the time I was cleaning my work desk and accidentally knocked it into my tool/software bag on the floor. Oh, yeah, and the time I needed to plug in a network cable for a pc I was setting up, and I moved JUST out of reach of the headphone cord...and yanked my darling right off the desk and onto the floor. I know I've unintentionally tested the rubber grip's bounce at least once. It's been dropped a couple of times on the wireless card; had to use scotch tape to keep the cover from coming off (the wireless card, not the Axim, thank God!) after the second fall. The Ax? Lost a few chips of paint on the top right corner. The wireless card has proven to be pretty durable, too, for that matter, and it was rather low-cost for the time that it was purchased. I dropped the stylus in a break room at work, once. The tip broke off, and I once again resorted to eBay. Tell you what, come to think of it, so what if the IR port isn't consumer grade? I just realized, this is the first PDA to last more than four months with me, and I've been carrying at least one (sometimes two) for four years! So yeah, SOME people stop dropping them after a couple of times, but some of us don't. When I ordered the Axim, one of my friends asked me why I was doing it, since I was only going to drop it. I was actually insulted by that, logic be darned, but he gives me computer parts, so I'll allow him a shot at me every week or so, and my husband insults him all the time, anyway.
BTW, I finally gave my employer back the fifth WorkPad in working condition, except for the dead batteries; I'm tired of filling out the off-site inventory forms every freaking year. I figure two back-up PDAs will do, should the Axim ever fall in the line of duty (and not get back up).
Complete Care Warranty? Erm...no. I'd never break it if I got the warranty. It would magically stick to any surface.
