Dropped mine from about 5 or so foot up, just got the TomTom loaded and Put the GPS Receiver in, walked outside to test it, tried to open the door as well as holding the Axim, it didnt work..
Dropped it on the stone floor, swore alot, and picked it up.... couple of scratches on the side but other than that it all seems to work :)
As soon as I could, I got a Rhino-Skin Leather case for Axim. I did not want to have an "I dropped it" story.
This weekend, my Axim slipped out of the case and went corner first into a stone floor. The case does not have any way to hold the Axim in when upside down while the case is opened. I cannot see about half my screen. The tap functions work fine, it is just that all I can see is half the screen.
As a good AximSite-er, I came looking here for how to speak with Dell to get a replacement...I will post again when I find out something from Dell.
2 weeks out of the box, just bought my new CF Wireless Card and could not zip the Dell Case up all the way with that card sticking up all the way...Dropped about 5 feet, scratched the screen and broke my heart....still does what it should I guess. Now that I loaded 2003, can't get the wireless to work anymore, solved the zipping problem! :)
I was letting my roomie check out my Halo theme and he handed it to our other roommate as I nervously watched. OF COURSE it fell from both of their hands in the transfer and bounced from coffee table to floor. All is good though, no scratching or malfunctions as of yet...
I have had mine since June and dropped mine the other day. I wanted to colapse inside. I have one of the metal cases on it and it dented it a bit on the corner, but did not hurt the Axim. For your Axims safety, buy a case and use it.

About two weeks into my life with my Axim I somehow managed to miss the belt clip. I cringed as my brand new toy hit a cement stairway landing. The Axim in its DSI Holster went one way and the battery scittered into the a corner.
Held my breath while I replaced the battery. Prepared for the worst as I pressed the power button.
It came right back on!
Damage: a couple of miniscule dents on the battery, not a mark on the Axim.
I dropped my Axim from my hands. It hit brand new concrete, and the battery flew off (about 4 feet). The case was scratched to hell, but after putting the battery back, it worked perfectly.
Two weeks later, after buying a Rhino Skin, I left the Axim on top of my car and drove off. I made two turns before tha Axim flew off the car. The guy following me out of the parking lot stopped me an returned the Axim. It had pock marks all over the Rhino case, but the Axim inside was still perfect.
I was amazed.

Dropped it at the grocery store today. I was dropping everything else, and when bending down to pick things up, my knee made contact with the bottom of the camera bag I use to carry my Axim and wallet. Axim was ejected onto the floor, landing on its head..which had my new Linksys wireless card crammed into it. Card was split open a little bit, but both are still working. I knew I shouldn't have left the house today.

Dropped mine a couple of times - all through being a clumsy so n so :D I know my prevous iPaq3630 would not have survived without some damage but the Axim soldiers on regardless :)
Dell has a warranty policy known as Complete Care. It is basically insurance for whatever device you purchase from them. If you drop it, spill water on it, or lightning strikes it, Dell will replace it under warranty.
This was not originally offered when the Axim first came out, but is now available. You can add it to your existing warranty within the first 30 days of purchase.
I always recommended it especially for anything like portables and hand helds.
For those who do not have Complete Care accidental damage is not covered under the normal warranty. Chances are that if you call in a technician will replace the unit, tell you to be more careful with it, and mark your account so it isn't replaced again for non-warranty damage.
So far, I've never dropped mine without some sort of case. Now I did drop it while in it's large nylon case I got. I tired to catch it, but ended up sending it flying up in the air, so it was like a 7 foot drop on concrete. Good thing it was in that case, huh :D
Heading to bed a couple of nights ago, I had my BE-300 and my Axim in my left hand, and a drink in another. I figured I'd get some Monopoly in before sleeping. I transferred the drink to the left hand to turn out the kitchen light...and I went from holding too many things to holding nothing. Worse, I couldn't even see where everything was. I had moved when the items started exploding from my grip, so I had to carefully scoot back over to the light switch. Surprisingly, the BE, which had proved more fragile than that before, was fine, as was, of course, the Axim. The owner is re-educating herself on priorities and strategies for not having to purchase a new PDA any time soon.

I bought a BodyGlove neoprene case for mine (had several drop-saves with my old Palm IIIc w/ a similar case), and it survived a couple of solid (accidental) drops. Unfortunately, I doubt even the Rhino Titanium could have saved it in the end - it popped out of my jacket pocket jogging across the street and managed to land just under my foot as my stride was coming down! The LCD survived the initial damage, but later died when I tried to self-replace the cracked digitizer/glass.
My new solution (thanks to a post here on Aximsite): a MadCatz aluminum GameBoy SP ArmorCase. Some tripping of the foam-rubber insert and I've got an industructible yet light-weight csae for 10 bucks!
