Why would the new backup battery drain if off?

Last month I bought a back up battery for my dad's Axim X5 an off brand called Renata CR2032 ( the Dell manual just says to use a CR2032). I installed it and then proceeded to charge the PPC over night then unplugged it and left it unused for the month. I went to turn it on today and found 2 dead batteries (in the operating system it indicates zero charge). I checked the backup battery and it is down to 2.3 volts. Why would that happen if I had no appointments open to drain the battery and the X5 is off? Is the main battery bad and it would drain the backup battery even if it is off? How would I proceed to test the main battery after I charge it again and would I do that with a new backup battery? Would I charge and then leave it off over night then take my volt meter to the main battery if so where do I put the leads?
Thanks Linda

Your axim is never off. all the main memory is RAM which needs to be powered.

When your main battery ran out of power the backup kicked in, and was drained. typically the backup batteries job is to keep the memory alive while you change the main battery.

So am I supposed to always have the X5 on the charger when I am not using it? It was only 1 month of having it supposedly off.

Or take a backup, and remove the batteries if you aren't using it. Even Palms will reset if just left in a draw for long enough.

It's the way all pocket PCs before wm5 were made (wm5 specifically solves that problem,, but you can't run wm5 on an x5).

Of course it doesn't have to be on ALL the time, just give it a charge every few days.
