Activesync no longer works
First I have spent almost 8 hours searching for an answer, I am aware this have been asked before but this situation is slightly different. I have been using my axim for 6 months on two different pc's (work a Dell with w2k, home a notebook with XP Pro) with no troubles. Yesterday, it would no longer sync with sync cable to laptop. I decided to bring it to work and try my other PC and sync with the cradle, another no go. In device manager, under USB, it does not show up. I have tried every described tip/trick including soft resets, hard resets, uninstalling Activesync (have tried version 3.5, 3.6, was using 3.7) all to no avail.
Any last suggestions? I thought it was a dead Axim, but on a couple of occasions, my work pc would display USB device in device manager, then display a failure when trying to load the driver. My notebook at home never displays anything under device manager but does refresh the device manager when the Axim sync cable is connected. I fear I'm left with a shiny paper weight. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the club. It is a very flaky program. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't. Always take the PPC out of cradle before booting the desktop, and try soft resets.

Any suggestions for getting the device to show in device manager? It will not show up at all. The device manager screen refreshes when placed in the cradle, but still no device listed.

ATTENTION: If you have hard-reseted your Axim, then completely uninstalled ActiveSync from your PC (along with all account information and stored documents), installed the USB drivers from Dell, went through the steps for installing the AS and Axim/cradle on a specific PC, and still the Axim would not connect, then it is a hardware problem of the Axim or the cradle. You should get in touch with the Dell support to get a replacement.......
Please note that you have to do the above steps without restoring your backup, i.e leave your Axim in a "virgin" state. If the Axim with no programs at all connects fine, and when you restore it will not connect, then take a look at my own AS thread (about a month ago), and you should find out what I did, step-by-step.......

I followed all instructions to the T. Nothing works. I have tried multiple clean PC's, both cradle and sync cable to no avail. I too believe it's a hardware problem. I bought it about 6 months ago as a refurbished on Ebay. The warranty is gone, I have no idea what dell would charge for repair. I'm probably better off buying a new pda.
Thanks for the posts and suggestions.

I also learned the hard way, why not to buy something from ebay. Although it was new, sealed in the box, it was sold as a refurbished with a 90 day warranty. It lasted about 4 months, and died. According to Dell, they won't perform repairs, only exchanges with customers who bought from them directly. Seems that the $50 I saved really wasn't worth it after all.

One issue with ActiveSync has to do with Internet Explorer on the PC. I've never seen this confirmed, but my suspicion has been that the automatic updates from M$ (to fix security issues) causes some of these problems. One solution (suggested on the ActiveSync Troubleshooting Guide) is to run the repair utility in IE. I'm not sure it will work in your situation but it's worth a try.

I found it was the USB on my computer. When I connected a hub to it, activesync worked every time
