You might want to let it be known to your friends and family how much you miss your x5... with it being unreliable and such. Suggest that you were thinking of getting an Inspiron Mini 9... about $250, but you didn't think you could do so....

That's a netbook, right? I was thinking more of something in a Blackberry size, but, alas, Verizon gets you for $30 additional a month to get the data plan, and the BB8900 (which has wifi in addition to everything else) is not available at Verizon - and I understand they no longer will allow a pay-as-you-go plan for any units that can connect in other ways.
I know, time to get rid of Verizon, but it's the only phone that works well where I live...
Hey Donna I have a axim x5 in pretty rough shape (screen is faded and the digitizer is scratched) but the motherboard is good. Since I just bought a new one I can send mine to you if you cover the shipping. They are pretty easy to swap Just a few screws and some gentle prying and you can get it apart.

Thank you, Mike, for your very generous offer. I really don't know that I'll be able to trade the motherboard out, so I'm going to pass. I don't want to put you out when I'm not sure what to do with your Axim. I am making do with my unit - as long as I remember its limitations I think I'll be fine.
Thank you again - it was very sweet of you to offer - sorry I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to these things.
Well it isn't that hard to do :) Heck I'll send it to ya for free! All I want is to see this thing actually get some use and since you seem to love your x5 I'd like to help you out :P I can walk you through it if you need me to but I bet when you actually see how easy it is you will be fine.
How can I thank you? No, I still am not going to take you up on your generous offer, but your offer spurred an old family friend to say "hey, I've got an old Axim, you can have it."
Well, not only did he have one, he had two - X3's I think (the middle model) they both work great - but no manual and no software to sync... but no matter.
BECAUSE OF YOUR OFFER I NOW HAVE 3 WORKING AXIMS! (Well, one only works reliably plugged in, but you know what I mean - lol)
You are wonderful - and I would have paid for the postage - I just didn't know if I could do what you thought I could... but I am very blessed and lucky - and tickled pink that there are such nice people in this world.
Well thats great that you got another axim! From what I know the x3 is similar to the x5 but certain x3 have wifi built in (I think its the x3i) so if you have one of those it should be better for checking mail and using internet since you don't have to use a cf wifi card. Heh I was about to offer to replace the board on your x5 myself but it looks like you don't need that anymore :). Anyway I can help you out if you need anything in the future.

I did get a new main battery - turns out it's the way the backup battery is being read. The same batter goes from 100% to zero in a blink of an eye, but when you shut the unit off and turn it back on again, it will read normal again.
I can unplug that unit if I pay attention to where the backup battery is. But the newer Axims I just got are much more sensitive to the wifi - I can really travel all over my house with them, where with the X5, I'm pretty limited in my house.
I need to find the sync software for the new Axims - just haven't found the time to investigate.
If your PC is running XP the Sync software will be the same.
If you have ActiveSync installed you should be able to connect your new Axims (with different device names) and create different partnerships.
It's possible that you might need a slightly newer version of ActiveSync, but if they work with the version you have stick with that.
Upgrading ActiveSync is something you should only do if you really need to, there are no real benefits, only less functionality.
If you have Vista you need Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) it is the vista equivalent of ActiveSync.
Both WMDC and AS can be downloaded free from here.

I have tried to sync up the newer Axims on my XP computer that has the Active Sync software, but neither of them were recognized as even being plugged in.
I thought the newer version of Active Sync has Outlook? Am I mistaken? And that it gave the functionality of downloading multiple email addresses into one place? That would be the only reason I would want the newer software - would love to be able to sync it up to the old software to have AIM and a few other programs I picked up along the way (and have no idea if I can still get them.)
My newer computer does have Vista - I think maybe I should just go for that?
Anyway, thank you so much for your help, I will definitely look into it.
